Which volca for my camping trip?

hey! I’m thinking about buying a Korg Volca for an upcoming camping trip. I’m not a keys player much, and have limited experience with synths. I own a digital synth keyboard that I use infrequently these days, but have also played around with analogue synths brielfy. I’m mainly a guitar player and singer.

My friend and I are going on a 5 day hike and camping trip and would like to involve some music. Drum sticks, egg shaker, harmonica are on the list. Considering a ukelele, or a melodica. I’m also thinking about a Korg Volca, but I don’t know which to buy.

I’d love to be able to play synthy/textural/lead stuff, playing the keyboard, but also possibly sequence or make something akin to a beat/loop that can be left running while we play other instruments.

We will probably be using the built in speaker on the unit, but could think about bringing a portable speaker too.

Can anyone suggest what might work here?

Thank you!

Lubricate curtain rings running on steel wire

We have hung a large canvas curtain that needs to be opened and closed by hand, on a tensioned steel wire. The closing distance is about 12m.

The curtain doesn’t run super smoothly when pulled. It stops and starts, and it’s hard to get a perfect close at the top as that relies on some momentum. Would graphite from a graphite crayon work to lubricate the steel wire? Any other suggestions?

Kensington Slimblade Test - First time Trackball user. Is this normal?

Just bought this Kensington Slimblade from Amazon. It was reduced by £20 as sold by 'Amazon Resale' mentioning the package was opened. But it all came in original packaging, plastic wrap, paper/foam under the ball, etc. So it was mint condition.

I've noticed my macbook trackpad is producing a far smoother and consistent result, as seen in the video, especially on finer movements, where I'm finding the trackball to be jagged and jumpy. I've been using it yesterday and today.

Is this just user error / learning curve, and I'll get finer control the longer I use it? Or could there be a problem with my purchase?

The ball feels clean, and like I said, it looks brand new in the packaging. But it leaves me wondering if the other person returned it as the mouse is faulty. I can still return this to Amazon and order another one if there is a problem.

If this looks normal for a first time user, then I'll just have to push through.

Thank you!

Mice! Standard, track ball, track pad?

I've been touring with my PC based lighting desk. I like to use a mouse rather than relying just on the touchscreen, as the screen isnt always super close to the control surface. I also find I'm often squeezing my desk into a busy FOH with little space for putting a mouse.

The solutions I'm weighting up -

A hard mouse mat to keep on my lap, or wherever there is space, to use a traditional mouse. This way I can use the mouse whether theres table space or not.

Track Ball mouse - The kind you scroll with your thumb or middle fingers. Doesn't need much space for this and can also sit on your lap

Track pad - Something like the Apple magic track pad. Like using a laptop track pad! Same can be used in the lap or in a small space.

Anyone have thoughts on what they'd prefer for their personal setups?

Generic Barn Doors?

I need to get ahold of some barn doors for a fixture with a 6.25” accessory holder. The fixtures are Chauvet Colorado Solo 1, which share the same accessory ecosystem with Chauvet Eve and Chauvet Ovation fixtures

The best price I can find new is about £35 per unit. I’m surprised that I can’t find generic nonbranded barndoor that fits. If I decide to buy new, for the number of fixtures I have it’ll be a big cost for just simple barndoors… Really hoping I can find some used or generic ones!

Ive found someone selling some used barndoors for the Prolights Studicob FC but from the data sheets I think the accessory holder is about .25” too large on the prolights fixture, so they won’t fit.

If anyone happens to have the barndoors for the prolights, it would be fantastic if you could measure the accessory holder for me incase they might match?

Alternatively does Anyone know of another fixture with 6 1/4” accessory holder, that I could try and find a cheaper option for those? Or somewhere that sells generic sizes of barn doors? Couldn’t find them on Aliexpress…

Any help to save a few hundred £ would be super appreciated!!

Accurate Mirrorball Rendering

I'm designing a mirrorball array which will involve an arrangement of 5 reflective surfaces, some possibly moving, a mixture of spherical and cylindrical.

I use Capture 2024 and I don't believe it's capable of modelling this. Can anyone suggest a good solution to model and visualise something like this for the client, and for my own experimentation with the design.

I would need to include haze and a 3-4 sources. I'd like to see the beams and possibly the projections from the mirrorball array.

If it's possible to achieve in Depence or another software I'm open to trying this. Any ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks

How would you rig some small static LED pars to these railings?

I've done it countless times in the past using G clamps or half couplers, but it's never quite perfect.

Just wondering if there's a good solution that I'm missing. Perhaps a plate on the front and back of the railing to bolt through? Is there an off the shelf solution?

Thanks!
