from a hilltop near Kilrush. Of course the sky cleared up exactly at the end of the eclipse.

Barn swallows at 1/8 speed OC

West Clare, May 2026. I recorded vocalizations from a common barn swallow (Hirundo rustica). I think this was the male, sitting just a meter away from his mate, perched on the nest they had just finished building.

Who was he singing for? What is his message?

As we slow down the audio recording to 1/2, then 1/4 and 1/8 speeds, the syllabic structure and phrasing of the "song" becomes more easy to follow.

I am aware that this is a well-studied subject, and maybe someday I will be so lucky as to figure out how to obtain copies of relevant published articles. But here's for what that's worth some amateur science with I think pretty good visualization of a single 1-minute source recording.

There is a faint background "warble" in the source recording hovering at 2KHz and that's from the old and decrepit Audio-Technica analog FM wireless microphone transmitter I used in recording this on a Sony PCM-D100 at 192 KHz although of course neither the microphone or the radio link has frequency response above around 30KHz. But the absurdly high recording samplerate at least made for clean downsampling.

Source recordings, extended clips at the different speed ratios, and the visualization software used is available for research purposes.

I have several headsets with better resolution and wider FOV now but I somehow still keep going back to my trusty old HTC Vive Pro for its lovely OLED colors and contrast. The wireless adapter looks ridiculous but works well, but I had only a very janky battery holder for it and decided to make a new design that doesn't fall apart so easy. So in case anyone else out there are still using this system, here's an easy to print and assemble 3D design.

I've only tested it with the OG Vive Pro and I have no idea if this works with anything else.

The STP files are included, including a version without fillets for easy remixing.

e: I should mention that the wireless adapter gets hot. I printed this design with ABS and it holds up well after long play sessions. Probably don't print this design with PLA.

Working on this design for a uniform height and depth modular organizer system with individual printable components for Ohuhu, Copic and whatever else I come across. The idea is to allow for easy and compact on-desk use while also supporting sideways storage. So there are finger grips on side for picking these up for example if you have them stored in a tub in between use. Also adding magnet snaps to design for joining several modules side by side, and for an angle shim block if you prefer to place these horizontally or a few degrees off from horizontal.

The current Ohuhu elliptic type fits 47 pens and consumes 120 grams of pla at .2 layer height and 10% infill. Working on a slimmed down design targeting 90 grams per module before release on github. Open to suggestions.

Yes who needs yet another organizer system.
