RPD breaks up fights involving hundreds at Ontario Beach Park; In-depth on beach security

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — News10NBC is working to learn more about a large fight that broke out on Tuesday evening at Ontario Beach Park.

Video shows dozens of people fighting and Rochester Police officers trying to break them up. RPD says they responded to a group of around 400 to 500 people. Officers didn’t arrest anyone, and no one reported any injuries.

Fights also broke out at the beach last year on multiple days. News10NBC spoke with people and business owners who saw the fights and were concerned for their safety. One fight last June involved two groups that were fighting, prompting police to call two RTS buses to take the groups away. After that, the groups started fighting again at the RTS Transit Center.

In-depth on beach security

Last year, crews installed automated security gates at Ontario Beach Park in response to the fights. The gates aim to prevent people from gathering at the beach after it closes at 10 p.m.

In addition, RPD and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office often increase their patrols at the beach during the warmer months. That’s especially the case during holidays and during summer events at the beach, like Concerts by the Shore. https://www.whec.com/top-news/rochester-police-break-up-several-fights-involving-hundreds-at-ontario-beach-park/

RPD: Man charged after throwing bleach on officers

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A Rochester man was arrested for allegedly throwing bleach on three Rochester police officers, which sent them to the hospital.

The incident happened just before 10 a.m. Tuesday. Officers were called to the 100 block of Selye Terrace by a woman who was asking for help dealing with her children’s father.

When police arrived, the suspect threw bleach on them before being taken into custody, RPD reported. The officers were treated at Strong Memorial Hospital for “exposure-type issues”, but do not appear to be injured otherwise.

28-year-old Juwan Jones has been arrested and charged with three counts of second-degree assault, three counts of second-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree criminal mischief, and second-degree harassment.

Jones was arraigned in CAP Court and is being held in the Monroe County Jail.

Lollypop Farm announced Tuesday that a Spencerport firefighter was charged after causing a cat's death during an attempted rescue.

Douglas McPherson was dispatched with the Spencerport Fire District to help remove a cat from a tree Oct. 3, according to Lollypop Farm. Video of the incident showed him using a high-powered hose, which caused the cat to fall from the tree and suffer serious injuries that led to its death.

Following the incident, Chief Jake Bromage condemned the tactics used and said an investigation was underway.

McPherson was charged with torturing and injuring animals.

"This charge reflects the importance of gathering facts to determine causation and not relying solely on videos posted on social media," Reno DiDomenico, vice president of Lollypop Farm Humane Law Enforcement, said in a statement. "Our investigators carefully interviewed witnesses, reviewed statements, and examined evidence that supports criminal charges. We are grateful to the individuals who promptly reported the incident, including the Spencerport Fire District, which helped to ensure accountability in this case."
