How strong or weak do you think the DNA evidence is for a jury or judge to convict him?
The Idaho State Police laboratory designated the strap/buckle area of the sheath as Item 1.1. It generated a single-source DNA profile, and after Kohberger was arrested, his cheek-swab reference profile matched Item 1.1. The reported likelihood ratio was at least 5.37 × 10²⁷ (5.37 octillion) times more likely if Kohberger was the source than if an unrelated randomly selected person was the source.

“Trace DNA” (sometimes called touch DNA) is DNA left behind from skin cells when someone touches an object. You don’t need blood, saliva, or a large biological sample. Just touching something can leave enough skin cells for modern DNA analysis.
What investigators said they found They reported finding a single-source male DNA profile on the button snap of the knife sheath. That means:
They recovered DNA from the snap. They were able to generate a DNA profile. The profile was attributed to one male contributor. But DNA profiling does not tell investigators: whether it came from a thumb,
an index finger, a palm, the side of a hand, or another body part. DNA analysis and fingerprint analysis are completely different things.
Taylor contested the use of investigative genetic genealogy (IGG) to trace the suspect from DNA on the knife sheath via family‐tree methods, arguing constitutional or privacy violations. She argued the way DNA was collected (trash pull, abandoned samples) violated rights. She raised the possibility of planting of the sheath (and thus his DNA) at the scene. Taylor’s argument was less about “he definitely didn’t” (at least publicly) and more about reasonable doubt: raise questions on how critical evidence was obtained, whether it may have been planted/ contaminated, challenge the fairness of the proceedings, and highlight gaps (motive, connection to victims).
A single, clean DNA match on an object left at the crime scene (the knife sheath) already makes innocence extremely unlikely. Random-match probabilities in modern forensic DNA are often quoted as smaller than 1 in billions or trillions in well-run labs.

What matters for forensic DNA testing is not just the amount but whether the sample was sufficient to generate a reliable profile. Investigators said they obtained a profile strong enough to:
- Develop a male DNA profile.
- Use genetic genealogy.
- Later compare it to Kohberger’s DNA.
DNA labs don’t usually report evidence as “We found 237 skin cells.” Instead, they measure
the amount of DNA recovered (usually in nanograms or picograms), the quality of the profile, and whether a usable DNA profile can be generated.1 nanogram (ng) = one billionth of a gram.
Modern DNA technology can sometimes generate profiles from very tiny amounts. The laboratory never released a number like 10 skin cells, 100 skin cells, and 1,000 skin cells to the public.
What we do know is that investigators described it as touch DNA (trace DNA) found on the button snap of the sheath.
Could genetic genealogy work on a very tiny amount? Sometimes yes. Modern labs can amplify DNA using PCR, generate profiles from surprisingly small samples, and sometimes work with quantities measured in picograms. But the smaller the sample, generally: the more technical challenges arise,
the more interpretation questions get asked.
What is publicly known? The publicly known facts are roughly It was a small amount of DNA.
It was sufficient to generate a single-source male DNA profile. The profile was strong enough to
perform genetic genealogy, identify a family line,
and later compare to Kohberger’s DNA.
That means there was enough DNA to create a usable profile, but it was still considered trace/touch DNA rather than a large biological sample like blood.
We know the sample was sufficient to:
- Generate a DNA profile.
- Be used in investigative genetic genealogy (family-tree searching).
- Produce a profile that investigators considered strong enough to pursue a suspect.
- Later be compared to reference DNA and reported as a match.
That suggests it was not just a few random degraded molecules.
So the evidence was essentially “Someone touched this snap and left enough skin-cell DNA to generate a profile.” Not “We found Kohberger’s thumbprint on the snap.”
As far as public information goes, there has never been a report that investigators identified a specific fingerprint belonging to Kohberger on the sheath. The major forensic claim was the DNA profile from the snap.
