RBC ATM ate my cash deposit. How does the investigation process work?

I had an RBC ATM cash deposit jam on me today and I’m wondering if anyone who works at RBC or has gone through this can explain what the process looks like.

Normally I always count my cash before depositing it, but for whatever reason today I didn’t. I’ve used RBC ATMs for years and never had an issue, so I got complacent.

The ATM started counting the bills and cheque, then jammed. It spit $205 back out to me and then prompted me to enter an estimate of how much cash I had deposited. I put down $500 because I know it was in that ballpark, but I’m honestly not 100% certain of the exact amount. Unfortunately this was right after closing time, so I couldn’t speak to someone at the branch.

I called and reported it immediately and a claim has been opened. I’m mostly wondering:

What happens behind the scenes when this occurs?

How long does it usually take to investigate?

When can I realistically expect this to be fully resolved?

Needless to say, lesson learned. Count your cash before feeding it into an ATM, even if you’ve never had a problem before.
