Opinions on the plot, pacing, and characters, please. The book contains some scenes—involving non-consensual medical procedures and psychological violence—that may disturb sensitive readers. There is minimal graphic violence and no sexual content.
I will to do the same: review the plot, pacing, and characters. No gore, horror, or romance.
That evening Michele pulled the eggplants out of the fridge to start dinner. He set them on the kitchen island and looked out the window, thinking about the last candidate. He felt pretty confident he'd made the right call.
Outside, night had fallen, and it was still pouring. Honestly, it hadn't stopped raining since he'd arrived in that small town in Washington State. The landscape around it could be spectacular, but the weather was depressing.
Six chimes marked the hour, and a couple of minutes later came the sound of the front door, followed by laughter and muffled shouts.
Mick came through the living room, Holden and Braith right behind him. All three were soaked to the bone.
"What a night to drag us out in!" Holden laughed, peeling off his rain jacket and hanging it on the back of one of the kitchen stools.
"Towels are upstairs, and your bags already arrived," Michele said, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Ora salite lassù in fretta, bastardi! You're wrecking the floor and I'll be the one mopping it up. Dinner's ready when you are!"
The three of them headed upstairs, and half an hour later reappeared freshly showered, in dry clothes.
"What'd you bring us?" Mick asked, leaning against the counter.
Michele stopped chopping eggplant and pointed his knife at a stack of folders on the living room table.
"Wasn't easy, but I think I've got a candidate. Where's Gao?"
"No idea," Mick said, pulling out his phone and typing fast.
The answer came back instantly. The phone buzzed to the opening riff of Back in Black for a few seconds while the screen lit up.
"Running late. His flight got delayed. Says not to wait for him."
Braith brought over the files. When he set them on the counter, Mick grabbed the thickest one and started flipping through pages fast.
"Salt and oil," Michele said.
Holden slid the ingredients over but didn't step back - he lingered, watching him chop and season.
"You mind moving?" Michele asked, turning around.
"My mouth's already watering," Holden said, grinning.
Mick looked up from the file.
"They convicted him on drugs, Michele. Trafficking. Did you see that?"
"He does drugs?" Holden asked, coming over to look at the document. The smile had shifted into a worried frown. "You know that could be a problem for the Program."
"I'm aware," Michele muttered, sliding the eggplant into the oven. "And I know it's a line we don't usually cross, but I think turning him down would be a mistake in this case."
