[found] The Usual Muppets: Not Suitable for Children, A lost NSFW Muppets short film
Hello everyone, for anyone unfamiliar "The Usual Muppets" is a largely obscure and forgotten 2004 AFI parody student film, which received some notoriety when u/Old_White_Man made this post on r/muppets last year sharing photos of a DVD copy of the film he acquired. From what I know this was the first public post showing the existence of a DVD copy of the film, or really anything about The Usual Muppets in general. The film was described by him as follows:
"It was a loose parody of The Usual Suspects, and there were also several references to other crime thrillers like Goodfellas. I'm sure I didn't catch them all. I enjoyed it, lots of muppet sex and violence, plus surprises in the end credits."
Although the original poster shared interest in uploading the film online to have it preserved they unfortunately never followed up. To my knowledge the film had never been shared online, nor had any footage resurfaced, which made it functionally lost and inaccessible. I am unsure how many copies of the DVD we're printed. However I assume they we're only made for some the cast and crew or possibly other students at AFI to share the project.
After looking for a copy myself on and off I was finally able to track one down, also from California. To anyone interested the full film is now uploaded and preserved on the Internet Archive, and you can view the film by accessing the link here: https://archive.org/details/the-usual-muppets
I am yet another Blankie who has just discovered the wild filmography of Joe Johnston
Now that I am aware, I feel like this guy is so inevitable for the pod that I’m not even going to frame this as a pitch (plenty of others have before me, I did check).
Was watching Jurassic Park 2 and started wondering about 3, looked up the director, and then a LOT of these movies clicked into place for me. A kind of rise and fall arc that feels like the exact original pitch of the show tbh.
Any other directors with filmographies that are less well trod (outside this subreddit)? I feel like there must be tons from my youth like Johnston where I had no idea a stretch of movies I saw were all the same guy whose name I never learned.
