Potential obsidian tools/arrowheads? Found near Bishop, California

I posted the first photo in /whatisthisrock and after much discussion and other shared photos (included in this post) I was told to post here!

4th photo is what it looked like upon approach.

5th photo is a screenshot from a video, but a decent close up

These were found in the Buttermilk area outside Bishop for those who are familiar. Originally I thought they were someone's old fire coals, but I got closer and realized it was all rocks! Seemingly quite out of place where I found them. Nothing else like it around, so transported there for sure. But they were placed pretty superficially. I dug a few up, but even those weren't fully buried. I'm guessing pretty new, but I don't know!

And, please be kind. I'm just a hiker who stumbled upon this and didn't realize what I (might have) found until posting on Reddit.

What kind of rock is this?? Found in the northern most parts of Death Valley, California

It was very airy and light. The ground around me was made up of rocks very similar to this one, but the blue was really striking to me. It looks to have blue, a rust color, and white! So so cool.

Knowing nothing I assumed it was volcanic rock of some kind. It was found in the northern area of Death Valley National Park in the Saline Range.

What kind of rock is this?! Found in the Eastern Sierra near Bishop, CA

I assumed obsidian, bc of the jet black color. It was glass like and sharp, too. But I don't really know anything. Didn't know obsidian could be clear if that's what it is!

Summit Lake, Sierra Nevada Mountains, California

Couple different views of Summit Lake up Mono Pass. (With some smoke from a prescribed fire in the sky of the second photo.) Roughly 9mi RT with ~2000' gain. This hike is easily in my top 5. Wow! It was stunning! And so much snow left up there. ~12k'

Epic Rock Formation

The mountains and cliffs of the Eastern Sierra are some of the craziest and coolest I've ever seen. I was rewarded with this awesome view at the top of my hike the other day.

Hardest hike of my life in a few weeks!

I'll be climbing Mt St Helens in June. It's going to be the hardest hike I've ever done covering 5700' in just a little over 5mi.

I've climbed Pike's (albeit many years ago) and a few other 13ers/14ers and done some other really tough hikes, but this one will be the toughest by far. It'll also be my first time with an ice axe, which is exciting but also intimidating.

I'm feeling pretty nervous!

What place made you fall in love with hiking?

Is there any particular place (or even a specific hike) that made you really fall in love with hiking?

For me it's the North Cascades in Washington. I covered over 125mi of trail out there in about three weeks. It'd be impossible to pinpoint which hike was where it really clicked for me, but I hold SUCH a special place in my heart for Maple Pass Loop and Sahale Glacier.

I'd been hiking for years before this. I always enjoyed it, but I did it for the exercise and the end destination. Period. But the North Casacdes is where I really fell in love with every element of hiking, including the uncomfortable and challenging ones.

My 11.5 y/o heeler still rackin' up the miles like a puppy!

We hiked 10mi RT for this epic view. Then she napped like a boss for the rest of the day. 🤣👏

What Makes It A Hike To You?

I'm curious to see what makes it a hike versus just a walk for people. This isn't about gatekeeping anyone else's experiences; it's about what makes it a hike to YOU.

For me a hike is a hike when at least 2 of these 3 requirements are met:
- 2+ miles
- I feel the need to pack food/water
- it's not on pavement

Let's hear yours!

I'm curious if Minaret Road past the gate at Main Lodge has snow? I want to take my dog up to snowshoe. My understanding is that dogs are allowed on the road (but not any groomed trails). Just not sure if we should expect to use snowshoes or not? Thanks!
