Traveling to CA using HWY 395

Hi everyone Im traveling to Southern CA from Reno using 395 . I seen near Bridgeport CA there is some snow on the road. I am just wondering if I would need chains. My truck is 4x4 but I dont know if that would be enough. I am leaving Friday afternoon. I want to take this route so I can save about 2 hours of travel. Please let me know if you have any insight or have traveled through there before.

Mammoth Second Season (this weekend)?

Just found out I need to be in Los Angeles on Saturday night for a meeting. Have a hair brained thought of flying out Thursday and doing a bulldog trip to Mammoth on Friday. Anyone have insight as to whether or not this is worth it? Any snow worth finding? Too crazy an idea? I'm an east coaster and generally always up for a wildcard trip to find snow. Any help/insight is appreciated! Thank you!

Is Stump Alley Trail closed or signage discouraging? Considering Chair 2 is closed

Are people accidentally going down Stump Alley Trail after getting off the lower panorama gondola?

As a non-advanced snowboarder, is Broadway off Chair 1 my only option? Forest Trail and Main Park fine for non-Park oriented boarder?

Mammoth Lakes to Tuolumne shuttle help

I'm planning on running from Tuolumne meadows to mammoth lakes in mid June. My plan was to take the first early morning YART from town to the trailhead, but I realized it won't be running for the summer season yet. Any other ways I can get to the trailhead? A private shuttle service maybe? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Lodging advice

Hey everyone, I'm planning to visit with my small dog 7/1-7/3 and peace out before the holiday weekend really kicks into gear. Airbnbs are on the pricier side and most are condos where the bulk of negative reviews are regarding noisy upstairs neighbors. Has anyone had experience staying at Outbound Mammoth hotel? Their Yelp reviews leave a lot to be desired but from what I've seen, the property actually looks pretty great? Expedia has a really great deal there at the moment. Thanks in advance

Beginner-friendly Eastern Sierra stops/hikes for late May near Mammoth Lakes?

We’re planning to stay one night in Mammoth Lakes next weekend and explore the Eastern Sierra for a full day.

More specifically, we’ll cross over to the east side on Friday afternoon through Tioga Pass, then drive through the June Lake Loop before staying overnight in Mammoth Lakes. The next day, we’re planning to head up to Lake Tahoe in the late afternoon. We’re a group of four adults, all beginner hikers.

We’re mainly looking for places where we can stop, get out of the car, enjoy the scenery, and maybe do some light hiking (around 1–2 hours max). Since it’ll be late May, we’re especially interested in beautiful lakes, peaceful creeks, and scenic spring conditions without getting into anything too difficult or snow-heavy.

Here are some of the places we’re currently considering:

  • Around Mammoth Lakes, we’re planning to visit Twin Falls Outlook. Are there any easy hikes nearby that you’d recommend?
  • We’re also planning to visit Hot Creek Geologic Site.
  • For Convict Lake, we were thinking of mostly just stopping by and enjoying the view from the lake area. Is there anything there that’s really worth doing beyond that?
  • Little Lakes Valley hike: would this be too snowy or difficult in late May for beginners? I’ve also heard parking can get difficult unless you arrive very early. If Gem Lake ends up feeling too difficult for us, which lake would be a good turnaround point before heading back?
  • How does Lake Sabrina compare to the other lake areas? It seems much farther south, so I’m wondering if it’s worth the extra driving time.

We’d also really appreciate any other recommendations.

Ignore the haters, there's still plenty of fun to be had on the mountain!

Is Mammoth Beginner Friendly for Mountain Biking?

My wife and I (63 an 61 respectively) are relative beginners in mountain biking. We've gone to Dodge Ridge, taken some lessons and rode the trail "Around the Horn" a lot. Now don't laugh, but this was all done on hardtails.

Unfortunately for us, Dodge Ridge will not have a summer mountain bike season this summer. They may next year.

We were thinking of going to Mammoth this summer for some downhill fun. In light of the fact that Mammoth is much bigger than Dodge Ridge and from what I can tell, a real "destination location" for mountain biking, would we find some trails that would be suitable for beginners and maybe for budding intermediate riders?

Minaret road, two and four legged pests?

I will be linking up with a few friends as they southbound the JMT this July. I’m joining them for a few days on the trail.

Is it safe to park my personal vehicle on Minaret Road? I know permit free long term parking exists and I am aware of potential rodent and bear pests with vehicles, but are there many robberies or vehicle break-ins from people?

Im still trying to find the best place to park a vehicle for 15-20 days this summer in the mammoth lakes area. Any other advice, insight, or warnings?
