Carlsbad High School is cutting the speech and debate 0 period—and it could force students to choose between AP classes and the activities that define their college apps and futures.

Here's the real impact: students like those on the debate team have built schedules that let them take intensive courses (like BC Calculus), compete at a serious level, and still have room for internships. Lose zero period, and you're looking at impossible choices. The research backs this up too—students in extracurriculars have better attendance, lower dropout rates, and stronger academics.

I started a petition asking the administration to find another solution. We get that budgets are tight and logistics are messy, but cutting this period isn't the answer. There are other ways to make it work if we all sit down and talk.

Has anyone else watched a school program you cared about disappear and felt like no one was actually listening? Our school right now is trying to cut our zero period speech and debate class. If this happens, most of our varsity competitors might not be able to compete, or will have to drop a class that is really important for their academic careers.
