Hot Off the Gnomie Presses: Tower of the Mothman Dungeon (free dungeon)

I just released Tower of the Mothman, a Shadowdark-compatible adventure set near a failing lumber town, an abandoned lighthouse, and a swarm-infested horror from the void.

The lighthouse is rotting.
The woods are crawling.
Pimsburg is almost out of time.

Inside you’ll find:

  • A faction-driven town on the edge of revolt
  • Corrupt mill owners, desperate villagers, trapped pirates, and a guilty witch
  • A ruined lighthouse dungeon filled with clues, hazards, and treasure
  • A deeper Mothman den with light, swarm, infection, and survival mechanics
  • Daily faction encounters that escalate the crisis over time
  • Mutiny and Revolt Pressure systems
  • Multiple entrances and routes through the adventure
  • New monsters
  • Magic items and special treasure
  • Choices involving pirates, villagers, corrupt aristocrats, and a desperate witch

It’s built for investigation, negotiation, sabotage, rescue, faction play, and gross bug-horror dungeon crawling.

You can grab it here:

Would love to hear what people think.

Are the Prequel novelizations good? Should I get them?

Edit: alright yall convinced me I’m getting all three.

Follow up question, are there novelizations of the original trilogy? If so are they good?

GnomeLackey's Workshop, New Free Dungeon Update for Tower of the Motherman.

Hey Gnomies,

I posted a new workshop update on Substack showing the current progress on Tower of the Mothman, my next free Shadowdark dungeon.

This one is a point crawl built around a dying lumber town, trapped pirates, a desperate witch, mercenary-backed aristocrats, and a ruined lighthouse hiding something much worse beneath it.

I’m experimenting with a middle ground between my previous projects: bigger than my 4-page dungeon Hunted House, but much smaller than the 70-page When the Shimmer Fades. Right now, it’s coming in around 30 pages.

The post includes a few spread previews, the point crawl map, and some notes on where the project is at.

I’d love to hear what people think, especially from anyone who has run or designed point crawls before. Do you like them as a tighter alternative to hex crawls? Do they lose anything, or do they just cut out the empty space?

Here is the link

Does verisimilitude get you boiling when not taken into account in a hex map?

For me, it depends. If the adventure is clearly trying to be believable then yes it would frustrate me if it just didn't make sense---I know, I know fantasy world and all.

What if they were randomly generated the hexes? Let it slide? I feel like that is ok, it would be even better if they gave a way to randomly determine the reasoning for two completely opposite biomes being next to each other.

Would love to hear thoughts and experiences.

Read Master and Apprentice for the 4th time. I need something new. Any suggestions?

Pretty much what the title says. I have a few on target, but don't know.

  • Alphabet Squadron series
  • Shadow of the Sith
  • Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade

Any of those good? If they are all good what do you recommend first? Thanks!

There is a lot being created for the Shadowdark community, which is awesome, but it's too much for me to consume, haha.

One philosophy I love about this game (and OSR in general) is telegraphing danger. What are some clever snippets you've come across? What has been your favorite at your table?

Sometimes a constraint makes something better.

I set out to make a dungeon that forced me to cut the fat—no scope creep, no bloat. Just the core of what makes a dungeon fun to run.

The result is Hunted House: a 4-page (2 spread) Shadowdark dungeon for levels 0–2.

What’s inside?

  • A roaming apex predator that reacts to noise and hunts the party
  • A non-linear manor with multiple paths and blocked routes
  • A simple puzzle system (Eyes of Ord) that doubles as a risk engine
  • Factions (ghosts + trapped adventurers) that create pressure and choices
  • A tight, one-page layout for keys designed for fast play at the table

Process for coming up with this dungeon detailed here
