I was rewatching scenes from Carrie after many years

And I realized that MISS COLLINS is GRANDMA MARIN!!!

GUYS I’M FREAKING OUT! How thoroughly awesome is that?!

I was literally watching the Prom Queen nomination scene and was like… “Why can I perfectly picture this young actress that plays Miss Collins as an older woman?” So I did some cast cross checking. The actress is Betty Buckley!

I will never again watch the scene of “Trust me Carrie, you can trust me…” without hearing Grandma Marin going on about her huevos rancheros 🤣

Husband ruins everyone’s day

I’m not sure if I should post this here or maybe in a parenting sub. But I’m so frustrated right now

If my (37f) “husband” (41m) is off work, there’s about a 50/50 chance he ruins everyone’s day. I put “husband” because we are not formally married, but have been together for the past 5 years. We share a 3 year old daughter, and his 3 children (15m, 11f, 10f) from previous relationships full time.

Some mornings he wakes up and is friendly and goofy and we all have a good day getting along and making jokes with each other. Even if I am bothered by him, I embrace these days because I choose peace over stress. I choose to let my daughter see us getting along. These days are usually pretty normal… unless you say or do the wrong thing.

Some mornings, he wakes up making odd noises, cussing under his breath, muttering insults under his breath, and even says disgusting sexual “jokes” with graphic, vulgar language under his breath. He will literally make loud noises that make everyone uncomfortable, that I can only imagine are from wanting attention and being angry at the same time. He sleeps on the couch because it gets really hot in our room at night, so when he wakes up, he lays on his bedding on the sofa with the lights off, in the center of the house. He stays there most of the day. I have learned to cope with it. But on these mornings he’s in a bad mood, it’s so uncomfortable and draining. It’s like a literal demon has temporarily possessed him and is sitting in my living room. As soon as he starts, my stomach will be in painful anxious knots for the rest of the day. I will make multiple attempts to regain his kindness but it usually never works.

Some days, he will act just fine, but start asking our 3 year old for attention. Like asking for a hug or to show her something. The thing about her is she is very sensitive to how someone is treating her. I have no other way to put it but than to say that she can tell if your aura is soft or if you’re giving vibes that aren’t authentically kind. She’s also a big momma’s girl and mostly only comes to me for affection. I notice that she shows him a lot of affection when he’s being genuinely kind and non-judgmental towards her, but that otherwise she’d rather just show you what she’s up to rather than stop what she’s doing just to go across the room and hug you. I repeat, she’s a 3 year old. It seems very typical to me. Additionally, he rarely makes any attempts to connect with her or play with her. Just calls her from across the room and expects her to come.

On these days that he starts asking her for a hug or to talk to him, if she doesn’t comply, he becomes really immature. I hate when he starts to ask her, and hold my breath every time. Because if she doesn’t go to him he will do things like suck his teeth and say, “Tsk, fine I see how it is.” Or “I’ll remember that” or “Fine, I was going to give you a surprise but now I’m not going to.” But he means it. His entire tone will change, and the entire mood will be ruined, and he will act out for the rest of the day.

I hate it especially because I feel like it’s teaching my daughter that love and affection are conditional. This happened just now, and to help lighten the situation, I told her kindly to show daddy the dresses she picked out to wear, to see which one he likes. (She loves dresses and was in the middle of choosing her outfit, which she loves to do, when he asked.) Well he completely ignored her. It broke my heart that he could just do that to her, and that she just stood there waiting for his response.

After I called him out, he went on to yell at me about how disrespectful I was and how I was teaching our daughter to be disrespectful. He also told me that I have white privilege!? I’m not sure how that works in this situation, but he brings up race any chance he gets. My daughter is half white, half Hispanic, and I try my absolute best to keep race out of conversations with or in front of my daughter unless it contains a positive message of some sort. I make it a point not to blatantly point out people’s skin color, for instance. But he makes it a point to portray white people as generally evil, and always in front of her.

I know this is more of a rant at this point. It’s hard for me to leave because I have no car and no money. I’ve left before and was able to stay with a cousin, but putting my daughter in daycare abruptly for 8 hours a day while I worked was killing my soul. I could tell it was dampening hers too. It was the only reason I ever chose to come back home, so that I could be with her. She’s a year older now and we are both more open to it, but I’m currently working on schooling. Part of me thinks I should stick it out until I finish and can provide for my daughter then.

Please tell me if anyone has had a similar situation, especially involving a child, and how you managed your life.

TL;DR My husband gets in a very bad mood anytime our 3 year old refuses to give him a hug or show him attention when he asks. He retaliates by ruining the mood of the house for the entire day, insulting me, using abusive language, and acting very conditional and immature towards her. If you’ve experienced this, please share with me how you’ve coped.

Literary references surrounding Ezra’s character

Remember that episode when Ezra comes in his apartment with take-out and apologizes for taking so long? He says, “looks like Rose of Sharon has been discovered.” (1x17) Meaning that the new restaurant he frequents is now busy and packed.

I always thought Rose of Sharon was an extremely odd name for a restaurant. I was like, why would they pick that?

I was reading Song of Songs (book in the Old Testament) and in Song of Songs 2:1, it goes, “I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys”. I said, hold up! I’ve heard that before!

After digging my own personal wormhole, I learned that John Steinbeck references the biblical phrase “rose of Sharon” in his book “The Grapes of Wrath”. (No, I’ve never read it. Not proud to admit that I missed out on a lot of literary classics growing up. Don’t make fun of me, smart ppl!)

It’s 1000% most likely that Ezra is referencing Steinbeck, although Song of Songs is a book of beautiful, romantic wedding songs/poetry, which is also an interesting literary reference in and of itself. (Hence, Steinbeck using it.)

I think it’s so frickin NEAT of the writers to drop so many references throughout the entire show, but also to surround Ezra the English teacher’s entire existence with such literary references in a way that most young people might miss. But in a way that he’s not even aware of because he’s just a character.

PLL was thoroughly a smart girl’s-show despite all of its plot holes and I love that. They just don’t make ‘em like that anymore!

Ezra being wary of Jason S2 (funny)

Watching S2 when Ezra and Jason are both invited to the Montgomery’s for dinner. Jason shows up and Aria answers the door. Ezra sees him and is immediately speculative.

I get that the actors are probably supposed to be giving each other a certain look that makes Ezra sense chemistry or attraction between Jason and Aria. But it’s not exactly portrayed well in the show/it’s not edited in a way that makes me feel like this is what happened.

I can’t help but think, every time I watch this episode, that Ezra just realizes that Jason is hot af and is immediately on high alert because of that 🤣 He’s never particularly wary or jealous of any other male in Aria’s circle.

PLL Season 1: Apply your own answers (SPOILERS!!)

I’m on like my 10th rewatch, and every time I rewatch this show, I either have tons of questions about the plot or new plot fails that I notice, and then eventually forget to answer for myself because there’s too much to memorize. Sometimes it’s failure of logic. I know it’s just television and there are no real answers sometimes in the PLL universe, but I thought it would be really fun to start logging all of the things that I’ve forgotten to look for answers for, or never questioned in the first place that now make me laugh as an adult with a fully developed brain.

Here are my Why’s/WTFs of Season 1. See if you can solve or apply your own logic to any one of these!

-What’s in the Neufelds bag that Ian gave Jenna, and why did he give it to her? (NOT the one A planted in the hotel room but the actual bag Ian gave Jenna at school? I used to think it was her lingerie for Garrett. Why?)

-The cops are mad at the girls for turning in Ian’s trophy because it’s not human blood, but how were they supposed to know that? How they were supposed to have “done a little research” on a blood stain, cop??

-If the cops know about Spencer lying about seeing Ian, then why aren’t they arresting/questioning Ian?
Wouldn’t / shouldn’t IAN go to “the top of their list”? (I don’t believe that it’s because of Garrett or because he knew someone on the inside. Because if that was the case, it would have been handled more privately. I felt that the writers genuinely thought that we wouldn’t question this, lol.)

-Who was still paying for Ali’s storage that had the lunchbox with the hard drive a year after she disappeared? (I guess it could be A, but the show never alludes to that at all.)

-If Jenna convinced hers and Toby’s parents that Toby was forcing himself on her, why did they allow them to be in the same house together?

-WHY DID HANNA AND ASHLEY KEEP HIDING THE MONEY IN THAT DAMN LASAGNA BOX IN THE PANTRY!? The first time it was found should have been enough to find a new spot. (And then Hanna moves it like 2 ft into a popsicle box in the freezer 🤦🏻‍♀️ )

Be back after rewatching Season 2!!

Has your doctor ever called your bank?

I love how Mrs. Potter had a heart attack and died and the HOSPITAL called her BANK to tell them specifically that she couldn’t be revived. Like, sorry, I don’t know this patient personally, but I just wanted to call and let you know she won’t be making her bank appointment that I somehow knew about.

God I love this show. Please drop some more minor moments that you know make absolutely no sense.

Love this guilty face Aria makes when admitting she was in Mr. Fitz car 🤣

Emily: “Whose car was it?”

Aria: “Ezra Fitz”

Spencer: “MISTER Fitz??”

Aria: …

Another plot fail (spoilers)

Did anyone notice that Charles’ flashback to the Radley roof top doesn’t match the timeline that the show had already set?

In the scene, Charles looks to be anywhere from 9 to 12. He meets with Bethany Young who then pushes Mrs. Cavanaugh off of the rooftop. But that doesn’t make sense because we saw in previous episodes that Mrs Cavanaugh died a year before Jenna’s family moved in to Toby’s house. Which would put him in 9th grade, right? Meaning Toby was about 13 or 14 when his mom died.

We already know that Charles is older than Jason and that Jason is way older than the liars. By like what, five years? (Judging from the home movie of the boys with baby Alison at the Campbell farm and the flashback to Charles trying to give baby Alison a bath.) Meaning the death of Mrs. Cavanaugh still doesn’t make sense because Toby was full teen when she died.

Either Charles is supposed to be a mid-to-older teen in that Radley flashback or that timeline is all screwed up!! Am I missing something?

Let’s give some room and say that Toby was 12 when his mom died, as I don’t think his age was ever stated. Charles would still have to be way older than in that flashback where Bethany pushed her. Bethany too for that matter.

Anyway, not that I expected more from the writers, but it drives me nuts. Lol.

What’s your favorite part of the series? (Spoilers)

For those of you who have watched the show multiple times, what are your favorite “eras”? Like I personally am always so locked in when Caleb is introduced, and then again when he comes back to town. I love the Hanna-hospital-house party gone wrong era. And I LOVE when they first introduce Lucas and everything about his screen time in the first season. I don’t even know why, but these storylines always make me sink in my chair and feel happy to be watching.

What are some of the funnest story lines for you, that make you feel cozy? Or that you just find highly entertaining?

Aging Fangirl

So, I first watched PLL in my 20s, and I thought Caleb Rivers was so fine. Now that I’m older and rewatching it, I’m looking at his dad, like…???? Dayum! 🤣 Also, can we talk about WAYNE FIELDS!?
