“Basement Smell” and how to get rid of it.

I am trying to redo my basement so it’s a bit more functional, it’s just slab walls and exposed ceiling currently, but I recently installed an LVP floor with a moisture barrier.

Before I continue doing any work, I’m still kind of stuck on the “basement smell”. It’s not… terrible…. But it’s a smell. I almost want to say it smells like masonry/stone, very stale. But I also wonder if it’s some kind of smell related to stagnant water in the basement plumbing for my washer/utility sink. Granted the entire basement smells, not just one area.

I run a dehumidifier down there and it stays at 50%, so I don’t think excess moisture is my problem, but I don’t know what it is… like do I need to wash the walls or something? It’s a 1955 house or so.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Old iPhone 6 not taking any charge, appears completely dead

Hello, I am looking to repair an ancient iPhone mostly because it has some pictures on it I’d like to recover, nothing that important but figured I’d give it a go.

I’m having trouble finding information specific to this model since it’s very old, A1549, so was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

The fault is that it has no power at all. I plugged in an ammeter and can see there is absolutely nothing going on. Sitting at 5v, no amp draw. I know this cable is good. I also tried holding the power button and the home button for 10 seconds to force a reboot, doesn’t seem to do anything.

Is this more of a dead battery issue or a charging IC issue?

Thanks

Anyone with a gas household switched to a combi on-demand unit? How were the actual savings?

Trying to gauge some real-world savings here. I have a cast-iron from the 90's that I'd like to replace for both space and efficiency. We are gas hot water, dryer, stove, etc.

Anyone who has switched, what were the actual savings like?

Thanks

Mini-split installer - eastern Nassau

I bought a mini split and realized the warranty is basically void if I did it myself, so wanted to get some quotes from someone who can just do the install (and is a certified HVAC tech).

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Help installing onto a dedicated partition - worried I’m about to accidentally wipe my drive.

I have two NVMe drives, one has windows, the other is just storage. I created an EXT4 400gb partition on the second drive with the intent to install Mint on it.

I got to the installation screen and it’s asking me the install type. Alongside windows, erase disk, something else.

I can’t figure out what it’s going doing to do if I hit install on any of these options. It doesn’t seem to be looking at just the 400gb partition in any of the settings.

Can I get some guidance here?

Sorry about pic quality… those are the 3 screens for the 3 options.

Looking to put a mini split in my basement but trying to avoid drilling through the foundation, how can I handle gravity fed drainage?

I’m looking to put a mini split in my basement on a foundation wall that is technically above grade. However instead of drilling through my foundation, I wanted to route the line set a few inches upward and through the wood siding instead. My understanding is that since this is a gravity fed drain system, you cannot do this.

Is there any alternative that doesn’t involve drilling the concrete? The unit would be on a wall that isn’t near any kind of drainage options (slop sink/washing machine/etc).

Thanks

Any way to stop UniFi protect from trying to adopt a device it shouldn’t be?

I just installed Protect and got one of the doorbell cams. However the app keeps trying to add a device it has labeled as a camera. It is in fact an NVR, but not UniFi brand, and I don’t believe can be adopted anyway.

It pops up every time I open the app requesting to be adopted and seemingly no way to just say “don’t adopt”.

Thanks

If I was looking to get a DX-7 is there a better alternative than that unit?

I know I’ve read on this forum somewhere that there was another Yamaha DX7’ish keyboard that does everything the DX7 does but it’s better. Would it be the SY77? Or the DX7II?

Any recommendations for concrete resurfacing company’s?

I am looking to install vinyl plank flooring in my basement but my slab is not flat enough to meet the requirements of the vinyl. Near the foundation walls appear to be ~3/4 to 1” higher than the center of the basement. Looking for my options to make it flat enough for the vinyl.

Robert’s Airguard or DMX 1-Step over cement slab

Hi, I am looking to install Click Lock LVP in my basement ontop of a concrete slab. It is relatively flat, may need some leveler but that’s another story.

I don’t believe my basement is particularly humid, I’ve never gone down there and said “it’s so damp down here”, no musty smells, etc.

So I am trying to determine the best underlayment for it. I’m torn between these two because Robert’s is significantly cheaper for the size and seems like it would be good enough, while DMX is several times the price, but appears to be the preferable choice among the Internet.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I’ve always tried to write my songs entirely in MIDI and basically replay it “live” every time I press play. I’m starting to wonder if this is not the best way to compose a song.

Just wondering what your workflow is like.

Thanks
