Me and wife pay $8,000 a year for just 3 day commute from syosset to Penn station

32M, We rent in syosset and work in the city (hybrid). We did the math, we are paying 8 grand between both of us, just to work in the city 3 days a week. This has me livid I think I need to either move or find a job on the island. This is insane. Disgrace.

Neighbors of McMansions, how was your qualify of life impacted / how are the people that moved in?

Next door we have an erecting McMansion and it’s been 6 months of construction noise, dust, garbage constantly flying over, now they have attached lights that turn their property into one giant solar beam penetrating through my blinds and curtains. It has been a very bothersome 6 months for us and it continues. I’ve had to tell them numerous times to keep garbage in their property and it keeps happening. They have a giant dumpster but garbage flies out all the time. Not to mention that huge dumpster causes visual obstruction on the road which frequently causes road bottleneck and also dangerous. It’s frustrating as a neighbor and i can’t wait til it’s over; I just can’t believe the town is ok with what seems like every other house being demo’d and multimillion dollar homes being built on lots the size of a tennis court. I’m considering calling the county about the repeated trash issues. Sorry to all those that bought these; beautiful homes, but obnoxious from multiple angles.

Also, how are the neighbors when they move in? I know a strange question to ask, but I hear it’s like a multigenerational thing where a ton of people move in together to offset the expensive price. Sorry for the vent, but it’s been much, and I’m curious how others’ experience have been

Experience with Amityville Schools?

Hello,

I have been renting in the Village of Amityville for several years. My wife and I have had an extremely positive experience. We have met many very nice folks and we frequently patronize a lot of the businesses downtown. We have found it to be very safe and we have dealt with the police for a non-emergency and they were very responsive and friendly. We are thinking of buying a home in the Village and I am looking to get some input on folks' personal experience with the school district.

I added the above background to basically illustrate, despite what others might say online, we have found the Village to be very pleasant and safe. I am not primarily worried about safety but academics and opportunities. We currently do not have children but we would like to and I'm thinking about the long term in context of buying a home.

I understand the schools here have a relatively low formal ranking and have faced financial challenges in recent years.

If anyone has attended or sent their children to school here in recent years, I would love to hear what you thought of the experience and how you feel the schools are trending right now.

There are some beautiful homes here and we love the relatively high walkability of the Village compared to the rest of Long Island. The schools are really my only major hang up about potentially living here long term.

Thank you!

Beach access with dogs

I was talking to a real estate attorney who is retired and does a lot of walking with his wife. He lives in Southampton and it seems that a lot of associations and residentials have blocked former areas where there was always access to the beach and the waterways. He said that no private property owner can all of a sudden decide to deny access to the beach area of the waterway where you walk. I’ve had that problem also in my area where all these areas where you could take your dog and let the dogs swim in the morning associations put up big signs that you’re not allowed to have dogs on the beach or you have to be a private member of the community all this bullshit that really wasn’t there before Covid and it seems like you’re losing your Liberty on the East End. There’s all these people telling you what you gotta do even though you did it for like 50 years you can’t do anything next thing you know they’re gonna try to ban duck hunting. Does anybody have any thoughts or ideas on this?

I'm a New Yorker that never posts about politics but Congress is about to vote on a Farm Bill that has a provision that would nullify most most state-level animal welfare protections. This would sentence many millions of farm animals to life imprisoned in cramped cages.

But luckily it's really quick and easy to help prevent this. I called the House switchboard at 202-224-3121, gave my zip code, they connected me to my rep's office. And it took one more minute to email my representatives through https://defeateats.com/take-action/

So I'm posting because I think a lot of people don't reach out to their reps because they assume it's complicated or they need to know everything about the bill. You don't. You can just say you're a constituent and you want them to vote no in under five mins.

Edit: I didn't expect so many positive response so I didn't mention you can find out more on this shared google doc if you're interested in doing more.

  • For example I hate phone calls as much as the average zoomer but it turns phone calls are weighted more heavily than emails by congressional offices, so this is the most impactful action with just a few mins.

Town of Oyster Bay code enforcement issue

Hello, all! I wonder if anybody has had runins with TOB Code Enforcement. I have a Town Employee neighbor with a McMansion who obviously doesn't like my almost 90 year old, simple house. He apparently hooked up with my rear neighbor who has a LARGER Mc Mansion and have been complaining about my back yard. Front yard is fine. This started about 2 years ago with knocks on my door every 6 months or so from a nice guy from "Town Planning." Nothing was ever done because even though he asked to see my backyard because "neighbors were complaining that they see mice and rats" and it must come from my property. Mice and rats in TOB; really its mentioned in every social media post throughout the whole township. But I guess they are all coming from MY back yard, WTF!! But, I digress... It seems that this nice guy retired. After I was diagnosed with lymphoma last October, got a new one who just came by and said the same thing. Of course, I didn't engage with her. Next morning at 7 AM, she tapes a Notice of Violation on my front porch door. Nothing was said about my yard; just that I had a too large shed in the back yard and I didn't have a permit for a 40 plus year old wooden fence; it's about 5 ft tall. The problem is, you can't see the shed and the fact that it has windows on the front (which she mentioned), unless you look out the upstairs window of mr Town Employee. She didn't inspect my yard; but this proves to me that he's the one playing games with me. Anyone have any experience with this type of BS? With my chemo treatments being rejected by my insurance cause they are "experimental", I don't have much disposable income to waste. Also, I am 72 years old and I just don't think I can stand much worry/stress. Owned this house for 44 years with no problems. Can anyone relate/advise? (apologize in advance for the length of this saga!) Have a good holiday weekend, everybody!!

Is it worth contesting a school bus ticket?

My dad was going the opposite direction on a busy, main road (no divider). I viewed the video and he was already in the middle of the frame when the bus came to a full stop. There was a guy on a scooter behind him too and if he slammed on the breaks there could have been an accident.

If I thought he was in the wrong I would have told him to just pay it, but I can't see how he could have stopped in time.

Looking for indoor lap pool

Hi everyone, I'm in search of an indoor lap pool with reasonable entry fees/memberships for the purpose of training for a triathlon/ just getting back into swimming.

Ideally looking for a spot close to either Babylon or Old Westbury (I live in one and go to school in the other, so either area would work for me).

I already belong to Crunch Fitness and really am trying to avoid cancelling this to go to LA Fitness (I've tried the gym multiple times and idk... just not my favorite place to work out).

House for Single Person

Hi all, I'm a single guy just asking for general recommendations on where might be decent to look that isn't something extravagant, preferably in Nassau or the border of Nassau and Suffolk.

I know certain areas are not the best, hence lower prices, but would people say they're actually bad to live in? TIA!

Going to UBS from Western MA--best way to get there?

I'm in western Massachusetts for the summer and going to a concert at UBS Arena, and I have very limited knowledge on the types of public transit around here. I've seen that the the train from Penn Station is what a lot of people would recommend to get to the arena, but is there a better way to get to the station than driving? We'd be taking my girlfriend's car, and I know she doesn't love the idea of driving in the city.

Edit: Thanks for all the kind and quick responses! I had heard some horror stories on parking at UBS which is why we were planning on at least taking the train to the arena, but it looks like driving will actually be the easiest! We'll plan on driving down and I'm going to see if I can get a hotel within walking distance :)

Floral park village overnight ticket

Im from north new Hyde park and there’s no sign and we can do street parking. I had to rent a car from enterprise for a family event and the guy said we can park down the street. I saw village parking signs so I went to the opposite side and there were no signs about parking so I assumed you can park there. Keep in mind I parked in middle of the street so when I walked all the way back I didn’t see a single sign about 3am-5am parking. Came back to a 100$ ticket.

Is there any way to get this dismissed? How’s someone supposed to know you can’t park there if there’s no signs nearby.

Antique/thrift stores for reasonably priced vintage finds?

Is there a shop on the island that has great prices on antique items like tapestries, candelabras, that don’t cost $500?

Where is the Spindrift at Target Westbury

Does anyone know why Target stopped carrying Spindrift drinks? I've been there over twice over the last couple of weeks and haven't seen any supply.

First-time tandem skydive at Long Island Skydiving Center (Shirley) - safety & experience?

Hello Long Islanders, I’m planning to do my first tandem skydive today for my birthday at Long Island Skydiving Center in Shirley.

Has anyone done it there before? How was your experience, and would you recommend it for a first timer?
Also, with the weather today, would you still consider going?

Thanks!

Disgusting

What drives a person(s) to do this to a child. If convicted I hope the judge gives all of them the max sentences.
