Why is it “el agua” if agua is feminine?

One of the more confusing things about Spanish noun gender is that el + noun doesn’t always mean the noun is masculine.

For example:

  • el agua
  • el águila
  • el arma

All three nouns are actually feminine. The masculine-looking article appears in the singular because they begin with a stressed a- sound.

So you still get:

  • el agua fría
  • las aguas frías
  • el águila blanca
  • las águilas blancas

I put together a short guide to the pattern, including common examples and the part that confused me most as a learner:

What Spanish gender/article rule or exception took you a while to really internalize?

🇪🇸 Spanish teachers: can your students beat you at EL vs. LA?

I built a free 1–2 minute Spanish reflex game and recently added a Teacher Mode so you can turn it into a class challenge.

Create a challenge → give students the QR code → they play → you see the leaderboard and which words gave the class the most trouble.

No accounts needed. No download. No prep.

I’d really love a few Spanish teachers to try it with an actual class and tell me what happens.

I made a tiny reflex game where you instinctively choose EL or LA as fast as possible. Native speakers are getting competitive too.

I wanted to see if Spanish article intuition could feel more like a puzzle/reflex game than flashcards, so I built a minimalist browser game called ELLA.

You just rapidly choose EL or LA for Spanish nouns and try to finish the daily challenge as fast as possible. Other modes like Survival and Sprint can be played more than once a day too.

The funny part is that words like:

* agua
* mano
* mapa

suddenly become stressful under pressure 😅

I’m especially curious how learners vs native speakers compare over time. Feedback very welcome. I'm still tuning the difficulty system and word selection.
