fuck the supreme court
the supreme court decision allowing discrimination against trans people (in sports and elsewhere) today is not about equality, safety, or science. it's about telling you who you are. it's about reinforcing transphobia, sexism, and bigotry. it's about maintaining lies about gender and science. it's about dividing us. it's about keeping us all - trans and cis alike - poor, desperate, and afraid.
if they cared about equality in sports, they would be focused on the vast gap between rich and poor in sports. they would address the prohibitive fees, the equipment costs, the barriers to training that comes with being too poor to access trainers, facilities, food and nutrition, and healthcare.
if they cared about equality in sports, they would end the wage gap between women's and men's sports.
if they cared about equality in sports, they wouldn't gender sports to begin with. this supreme court decision just tells everyone that women are weaker than men. that it's not down to individuals, but to gender or sex.
if they cared about equality in sports, they would have to admit that they have spent decades claiming the only paths out of poverty for Black people are the highly exclusive, exploitative, dangerous, and abusive entertainment and sports industries. that the few poor people who gain fame and fortune through athletics are being used by rich (mostly white) people.
if they cared about equality in sports, they would address the deep racism still present even decades after integration. they would address the fact that some players may make big salaries compared to most, but the owners of the teams are billionaires who live in luxury while the players die in medical debt.
if they cared about equality in sports, they would let communities own the sports teams.
if they cared about being scientifically accurate, they would be forced to acknowledge that intersex people exist. they would be forced to acknowledge the long history of forcibly and surgically altering babies' bodies. they would be forced to acknowledge that sex in human beings is not binary no matter which metric you choose - genitalia, reproductive organs, chromosomes, outward appearance, or any other measure. it's never binary. it never has been.
if they cared about women's safety in sports, they would address the rampant sexual harassment and assault that has occurred there. if they cared about women's safety in sports, they would address the frequency of eating disorders, body dysmorphia, and abuse in sports. if they cared about women's safety, everyone named in the epstein files would be in jail right now. if they cared about women's safety, we'd not have had multiple rapists as president over the last few decades. if they cared about women's safety, they would be focusing on cops and priests, not trans people. if they cared about safety in sports, they would do more to reduce the horrific damage done to human bodies in football, wrestling, boxing, hockey, and other contact sports.
what they care about is telling you to hate trans people, so that you're willing to give up on your right to be yourself. so that you throw women under the bus. so that you spend your time hating trans people and not organizing against the rich who are exploiting you. to make trans people desperate and afraid and willing to work for nothing, driving everyone's wages down. to get one step closer to completely criminalizing being trans, so we'll end up in gendered prisons where we're targeted for violence. and the next thing you know, women won't be able to wear pants, have bank accounts, or work jobs (rich) men deem too "dangerous" for them.
the only response to this is to fight back. to tell anyone who thinks this a good thing exactly why it's bad for them. to stand up for trans people and for yourselves. to get organized. to make your community organization, union, or workplace speak out. to unite with everyone else under attack by this fascist regime. there's nowhere to run. we have to fight.
