63’ Panhead Oiling Issues
Was battling an intake manifold leak for weeks, tried every kit under the sun.
On my fifth kit I noticed my bike started getting ridiculously hot on the clamps, manifold and then eventually I noticed the intake, pump and cases were smoldering hot.
Before I shut it down I realized there was zero oil returning to the tank.
From there I tore through my lines, the oil tank, the oil pump, the cam case. Noticed a few small pieces of black plastic pieces trapped in my breather gear. Upon inspecting oil from bag, there was lots of debris trapped in sludge on the 60 year old tank bottom. Left behind from someone else’s blowup. Check crankcase oil, found zero debris, shavings, metal, no nothing.
Finally disassembled my oil pump and found nothing worth nothing (to my unknowledgeable eyes). Check all oiling passages, all were free clean and clear of debris. Cleaned all fittings lines etc. Reassembled.
Oil made it up the pump on kick. Made it to the return port. But did not make it to the pressure gauge or the head line port. I started the bike up a few times for less than 5 seconds. Oil dribbled out of the return line but no constant stream. No oil pressure registered and still no oil to the head line port.
I’m at a totally loss. If it was the pump, what are the odds the pump just failed so quickly that it registers zero pressure on start up and produces so little pressure nothing comes up the pressure port or head line port?
I would greatly appreciate any advice or person willing to share some knowledge. I’m so far out of my depth here and nothing I’m doing is making sense to me at this point.
