i wanna add some more plants but don’t know if i wanna go artificial or real

sorry for the mess, just moved in! but i've tried scouring pinterest for ideas on how/where to place any sort of rug in this entryway and no foyer looks like mine LOL
how would you place a rug here? what sort of rug like dimension wise? (and would yall put shoes under that heater thing like i did or am i gonna burn the apartment down doing that??)

i think this thing is a heater? i'm not sure since obviously my heat isn't on in this heatwave. but is it okay to put shoes like this underneath it, and potentially put knick knacks on top of it? i'm trying to avoid buying a shoe rack by sticking them under here but i don't wanna burn the place down haha
