We tried Ferber for the first time and I have a question

We have an 8 months old and we’ve been trying to sleep train him using gentle approaches ever since he was 5.5 months old. Yesterday we gave up on that and after seeking advice on reddit many times, we decided to just to try Ferber.

The first night went better than expected! Though after 3 checkins we noticed he’s only escalating his cries so we stopped the checkins. It seems that Ferber relies on sleep pressure to make sure the baby is not undertired so he doesn’t cry for hours and hours. This worked really well for bedtime and his other 2 wake ups.

My question is, his last wake up was at 5:30am which seems to be his new wake up time (for the day) after the schedule adjustment (went from 2.5/3/3.5 to 2.45/3.25/3.75 to now 3/3.5/4.25 with total daytime sleep going down from 3h to 2.5h). He has very low sleep pressure at that point, do we keep doing the check in method until 6am? or do we leave him be until 6am?

Reddit advice still not working 🫩 8 months old still giving us hell

Hey guys! I keep making new posts because I never get replies on my followup comments :(

Context: we have an 8 months old who resists the crib so much at bedtime, we’re talking resisting and crying for an hour at least. Our sleep training approach is pickup/putdown - i think that’s what it’s called. We basically only pick him up from the crib if he’s crying bloody murder. Otherwise we try to soothe in the crib even if he’s refusing. Our other issue is that after his first feed of the night which we push to be between the 12am-1am window, he tends to resist the crib a lot too, and after his 4am-5am feed as well. On top of that, he wakes up roughly an hour before his scheduled feed and would not take the crib, keeps waking up whenever placed and cries until it’s feeding time. He may dose off for 15 or 30min but would still wake up.

The advice we got and have tried so far is adjusting his wake windows. We started off with these windows and total daytime sleep: 2.75/3/3.5 and 3h or 2.5h total daytime sleep depending on when he wakes up which is anywhere from 6:10am to 6:40am with a bedtime between 7:20pm and 7:40pm. Now, our wake windows are 3/3.5/4.25 and aiming for 2.5h total daytime sleep. Note that it’s been really difficult to extend the first wake windows beyond 3h because he gets extremely tired and sleep after 2.75.

When we started those new wake windows, bedtime became easier but we’re still facing all the other problems. On top of that, he’s now waking up before 6am🙂‍↕️ He’s back to waking up around 5:30am and 5:40am.

We tried these windows for 2 days now with similar results. Are they the problem? or do we need to keep at for a week let’s say to see a real change?

Also, we both work full time jobs from home and don’t have any outside help so on rough nights where we try for an hour to put him in the crib during his wake ups after 12am, we do give in and cosleep and attempt the crib again after his 4am feed.

Any advice is greatly appreciated 🙂‍↕️

How to calculate total sleep budget

We have a LO who’s a terrible sleeper. He’s 8 months old and we’re trying to sleep train using a gentle approach but we’ve been trying since he was 5.5 months and I can’t say we’ve made a really meaningful progress. We still resort to cosleeping on rough night but even that doesn’t give us a good stretch. He’s been refusing the crib to much lately during MOTN wakings. We even tried letting him cry for 5 and 10 minutes and he would just cry without any attempts to self soothe.

A lot of the posts on here talk about sleep budget and how we shouldn’t spend too much of the budget during daytime naps so that they can consolidate nights better.

I have no clue how to know how much total sleep our LO needs. Can someone guide me?

Here are our useless wake windows: (2.75 or 3)/3.5/4. We try to aim for 3h total daytime sleep but he sleeps closer to 2h15min or 2h30min. Usually wakes up at 6:10am but some odd days he wakes up at 6:40am. Bedtime usually falls between 7:20 and 7;30pm.

8 months old plays in crib at bedtime instead of trying to sleep

Context: we used a gentle sleep training method at 5.5months old and we were down to only 2 night wakings for feeds on good nights and 3 night wakings on bad nights. At bedtime we used to let him fuss it out in the crib while shushing and eventually he would turn on his stomach and fall asleep.

When he turned 7 months old his night wakings increased and now that he’s 8 months old, when we place him in the crib to fuss it out, he just stands up and seems to want to play. We let him play to burn out whatever residual energy he has left but he would end up overtired and start crying too much and eventually falls asleep while we’re rocking him. This of course is leading to him waking up every 1h30min at night :( It’s been almost a month of terrible sleep and no matter what wake windows we try, it’s always the same.

He’s still on 3 naps because his wake windows are too short to allow for 2.

He wakes up at 6am, his first wake windows is always 2h30min because he gets so grumpy and fussy if we try to extend it and he falls asleep within a few minutes and usually sleep at least 1h30min in that nap (we usually cap it).

The second wake window is 2h45min sometimes we can stretch it to 3h. Again he takes a few minutes to fall asleep and could sleep for 1h30min (we usually cap it).

Same for third wake window, either 2h45min or 3h.

At bedtime it’s usually 3h and we’re trying 3.5h.

We aim for 2.5h (most days when we can squeeze in 3 naps) or 3h of daytime sleep (when his schedule doesn’t allow for 3 naps so we do 2 and aim for 3h to push back bedtime).

Summary of wake windows:
on 3 naps days: 2.5/2.75/2.75/3
on 2 nap days: 2.5/3/3.5

It’s taking almost an hour and a half to put him down to sleep and only by rocking :( Not sure what other information to post but would appreciate any help or advice 😭
