Struggling with front windshield wiper replacements...

This feels like such a dumb post but I've spent so much time looking up options without a lot of clarity on what will actually fit other than OEM. Any input appreciated!

2017 Gen 4 Prius 2. Front wipers are 28in and 16in.

I've always just gotten OEM wiper blades but I haven't found them to work super well and want to get something better.

Read thru a bunch of posts and people there are lots of recommendations for Bosch Icon and PIAA brand and to get a silicone blade.

I ordered these even though Amazon said they didn't fit bc I had read they should come with an adapter. They didn't. I looked for where I could buy they adapter, can't find it, so I'm sending them back.

Thinking about trying these PIAA blades. Amazon also says they don't fit but they come with multiple adapters and in the picture, one of them looks like a push button adapter (which is what my car needs). I checked PIAA's website but didn't find a compatibility list there.

Can anyone confirm if that PIAA set should fit? Or does anyone have a link to something they would recommend instead?

Hotel options and can you walk to games?

Planning on doing a trip out to Louisville to watch my team play and it looks like I could potentially get an Airbnb in the "East Market District" and walk to the game (or maybe something near Frankfort and Story).

Assuming you don't have mobility issues, is that doable?

Meaning, are there sidewalks and you can do it safely vs it's technically possible but there is some walking in the street or crossing lanes of traffic?

I was looking at the satellite view and it looked like you go under the freeway in one spot and couldn't tell if the parts that are closer to the stadium are actually walkable or not.

It would be a Wednesday night game so I also wouldn't want to be walking back in an area that's totally dead and deserted after the game (some areas really close up shop outside business hours and since I'm going solo, I want to make sure I'm not wandering thru an empty warehouse district in the dark).

If you know of somewhere that's a bit farther out but that is good, would love any suggestions. I'll be driving there so I could stay farther out and just park at the stadium.

Bonus points if you know of any dog friendly Airbnb type options bc I was thinking about going out with my dog for the Pups in the Park night in September.

Bent up metal piece along the roofline/gutter... is this normal?

TLDR: In prepping to replace the gutters, we found a hole which then made me notice a weird, bent up metal piece on the shingle roof and I just wondered if it's normal. The metal piece that is... not the hole.

Pictures here.

---

I bought a 1920's home about 2 months ago. It has been well maintained but the gutters are in rough shape and I knew they would need to be replaced.

I noticed that some starlings were always hanging out in that spot but I assumed they were building a nest in the actual gutter. When I had a guy out to do a quote on new gutters, he said it looked like there was a hole. I got a camera up there and there is a hole so now I'm working on getting that sorted out too.

While doing all that though, I was looking at this bent piece of metal and thought, "That can't be right..." But I'm not a roofer so I have no idea what's normal. Is that normal?

It's hard to tell from pics but it's near the "channel" where the roof of the house and the roof of porch meet (it's a crasftsman style bungalow and the porch is original, not a later addition or anything).

Neighbors say the roof is 4 years old (they had theirs done at the same time with the same people). Before calling the company that did the roof, I just wanted to educate myself.

Also, I did get an inspection. I think the guy was good but when I look back at the report, this part of the roof isn't in any of the pics so maybe this isn't an issue or maybe it just got skipped. Not trying to pin this on anyone, just want to know if it's something that needs to be fixed so I can take care of it if it does (again, the metal piece, not hole 😅).

Inverter dehumidifiers?

I recently bought a 100 year old home in Cleveland. It has a "wet" basement so it needs a humidifier keep the moisture levels in check.

The current one is old and super loud (it's in the basement under my bedroom and it's annoyingly noisy even thru the floor) so I want to replace it.

I know window AC units with inverters are more energy efficient and quieter so I thought I would look at getting an inverter dehumidifier. It seems like they exist in theory but I can't actually find any for sale in the US.

Are they not really a thing? Should I just go with an Alorair instead? Something else?

I want a unit that will be quiet, not die after a few years (it seems like a lot of them crap out quickly), and ideally, not be a massive energy hog (I know that they do tend to use a lot more energy than you might first think but I just want one that is "good"/efficient for a dehumidifier).

I have a pretty regular midwest basement so I don't think I need anything too crazy. I don't have "water" in the basement or anything. I just need to manage the moisture that wicks thru the brick foundation and the humidity from the air in the summer so I don't end up with moisture, mold.

How to not have a bad experience getting central a/c installed?

Just purchased a century home that has forced air central heating but no A/C. Inspector said ducts are sized right to be able to add central A/C relatively easily.

I see so many posts from people who have had terrible experiences getting A/C installed, looking for advice on what to do/not do.

I've owned condos before but never a house and have never had to hire out a service of this scope/cost.

Beyond licensed and insured and get at least 3 quotes, what questions do I need to ask or look for? Any advice on identifying a reputable installer/company?

OH: Next step for killing carpenter ants?

The Situation: In Ohio. A new to me 1927 bungalow with an adorable front porch. The wood is old, deteriorated in some places. It will get fixed but in the meantime, I have carpenter ants milling around the front porch and occasionally one or two wander inside.

I tried Advion Granular Bait (0.22% Indoxacarb) and Maxforce granular bait (1% hydramethylnon) with no success (it's been about 4-6 weeks so I assume it's not working).

Both were popular with the little basic black ants (didn't have too many) and popular with the critters (my bait trays were being broken into/thrown around at night) but no real interest from the carpenter ants.

The guide says WSG is best it doesn't seem like that's recommend very often for carpenter ants.

Have a lot of recommendations for Taurus SC and Termidor (both fipronil) so I was thinking about trying that next.

They haven't had any interest in any bait so far so I'm hesitant to try Syngenta Advion Ant.

Any suggestions on best next steps?

Is this an old vent that I could maybe tie into for a range hood?

A new to me 1927 bungalow in Ohio. With the exception of the 1980's kitchen update, there have been very few updates to this little gem (which I think is great).

The kitchen does not have an exhaust fan and I was planning on adding an in wall exhaust fan on the wall opposite the oven (it would be too complicated for me to run ducting up thru the walls and out the roof).

I was putting up a spice shelf just now and looked behind the microwave for the first time and there is a weird circular drain cover looking thing and I'm wondering:

  1. Anyone know what it might be?
  2. If there is maybe some existing ventilation there? It's very unlikely that there was originally an exhaust fan but some homes had passive ventilation over the stove.
  3. If it is ventilation, would it be a.) possible and b.) safe to add an exhaust fan/hood (when I redo the kitchen)? I know you don't want to combine exhaust vents for cooking and a clothes dryer but I'm not sure if you don't want to combine kitchen exhaust with anything or if maybe that's what this was intended for (even if it wasn't built for an actual fan).

Additional details:

  • Pictures and video showing the cover and location.
  • To the left of the stove there is a "bulk head" (?). That wall contains the "furnace chimney" (not sure the official terms for some of these things but it's the brick chimney that the water heater vents into, it's separate from the fire place chimney).
  • The water heater vent is not directly into the brick, it goes into a duct pipe that goes into the chimney.

Imgur link with video.

I’ve been calling her Francine the Fancy Deer because she has a bright orange necklace and dangly earrings on both ears. Some might say she's a bit over accessorized but I think she pulls it off.

Is there some kind of tracking project happening or something? I’ve never seen a deer tagged like this and don’t remember noticing any tagged deer in Cleveland Heights before (maybe it's common and I’ve just never noticed it before though). I’ve spotted her a few times this week near Canterbury Elementary but hadn’t seen her before this week.
