Help me understand the CNC world

Listen. I’m (28 F) an admin assistant. I handle the paperwork side of things. I need help.

My boss is an older man. He’s asked me to help him find a CNC machinist (no, this is not turning into a job advert.) I’m not disclosing my specific area, but I will say I am in semi-rural Kentucky. It is SO HARD.

It seems there is a shortage of CNC machinists with experience? He’s open to training but honestly we have too many learners and not enough knowers lol

Is this the norm? We are paying $30-$35/hr (great for semi-rural Kentucky) and it’s M-F 7-3:30. Benefits. Vacation. Climate controlled shop. Is our offer bad? Or is this just the market?

Thanks for helping a clueless admin worker.

Edit to add: We’re an industrial repair shop, so a lot of our work is repairing/rebuilding industrial gearboxes, clutches, backstops, etc. rather than repetitive production machining. We get equipment/parts in from different industrial applications, so the work can vary quite a bit. On the machining side, our posting lists CNC lathes, milling machines, VTLs, and water jet machines, with HAAS and Fanuc controls. We do need setup and programming skills. The position involves reading prints, creating/editing programs, and sometimes reverse engineering a sample part to make a replacement.

As far as whether our mills are horizontal/vertical, exact axes, and the manual machining requirements, I’d have to ask one of our machinists before I give you a confidently wrong answer… 😂 I’m the admin, not a machinist.

The Sweetest Dog

Luna, my approx. 8 year old lab mix. The sweetest angel. I got her back in 2019 while I lived in North Dakota. I’m her 7th owner. She has been nothing but a blessing, and watching her grow old is so bittersweet. I want her with me forever. She is so sweet, loving, happy, snuggly, and smart. She is the best dog I have ever owned and ever with own. I cherish her.

30% chihuahua, 30% pit, 100% naughty

Here is Pepper. I got her at the local shelter. I love her with my whole heart. They originally listed her as a Jack Russell mix but I did a Wisdom Panel (not sure how accurate they are, but they’re fun) on her and discovered she’s 30% chihuahua, 30% pit, and the last 40% a bunch of random things.

I’m interested to see how she will look as an adult. She is barely 3 months old ❤️

Getting it off my chest

I have never talked about it before. I shouldn’t be ashamed. It’s just embarrassing. I’m glad to have found this group and I hope to work past these negative feelings.

I have pulled my eyelashes since I was approx. 5 years old. I pulled my eyebrows, too, starting around that age, but I grew out of it around middle school. I got teased throughout school for not having eyelashes. In elementary and middle school, it would just be curious questions from my peers and teachers. In high school, I had an embarrassing nickname I don’t even want to type out. It’s weighed heavily on my self-esteem.

I am a 28 F and I still pull my eyelashes out, but mostly in my sleep. Sometimes I hit my brows a little, but it’s never substantial. I am jealous of the girls with long, pretty lashes. I have not been to therapy for it. I can’t afford it right now.

I did manage to stop long enough to have short lashes for my sisters wedding about a year ago, but I began pulling shortly after. This tells me I absolutely CAN stop, but it’s horribly difficult.

I started NAC yesterday. I have read some promising things. Please wish me luck. I wear an eye mask to bed (but I usually take it off in my sleep.) I also try to keep my nails short. I would love to have some lashes (even if they’re short) but the holidays.
