We know our design sucks

And has gotten worse this past week.. We are working VERY HARD to get it in tip-top shape. Expect that by the end of this week we have a beautiful redesign that makes the core functionality, filters, etc. very easy to use. If you have any feedback too please let us know!

Working around the clock to keep the lights on! We burned over $8000 yesterday on all the Talent Agent requests and it was totally worth it because people are finding jobs that wouldn’t show up in Classic Search.

And no we still aren’t making any money yet :) we keep procrastinating on business model because we want the make this product the best it can be before the job hunting season ends in November.

Some changes and freebies

We made two important changes this morning after our Talent Agent launch this week:

1) BIG CHANGE: You can now try the full Talent Agent and see your first 8 results without creating an account or joining the Talent Network.

This is a pretty expensive change for us. Finding your top 8 results still requires us to run the full search, which costs us about $1 every time.

But we really wanted everyone to be able to experience the magic of the Talent Agent before we ask you to sign up for anything.

2) We added a big, very obvious toggle to switch between Talent Agent and Classic Search.

A lot of people asked whether Classic Search was going away. It’s not. We want to make it extremely easy to switch between the two, and we’re committed to keeping Classic Search around.

Fair warning: change #1 is supperrrr expensive for us, so if it looks like we’re about to go bankrupt we may have to rethink it 😂

But for now: enjoy the free AI searches, and if you like it, spread the word about HiringCafe ❤️

Revenue without enshittification

Hi all! This past week we've been brainstorming how to make HiringCafe a sustainable business so we can do this long-term. Before we launch any more monetization experiments, I wanted to explain our goals and share how we think through this.

Two years ago when me and Ali started HiringCafe, we had a long debate about whether to make HiringCafe a nonprofit or a for-profit company. We both cared a lot about helping people find jobs, and were sick of the Indeed/LinkedIn monopoly. But we came to the conclusion that to really take on these players its better to make a company out of it and deliver a better product, rather than take a Wikipedia route. So far, we've been operating as a sort of Craigslist-model, which worked really well when we were just scraping jobs and adding a bunch of filter

The problem: keywords search sucks, and good search is expensive. We got lots of complaints [1][2][3] from users who were getting bad search results because we were just using keywords to do our searches. What we realized is that keyword search isn't enough. There's lots of jobs that are super relevant but will NOT show up in a keyword search, and ultimately we want to be able to find EVERY SINGLE JOB that is relevant to ever user and worth applying. This is why we started building our Talent Agent. We've seen a lot of users love it, but it's damn expensive. Each search is costing us around $1 to run right now, and if we turn it on for all users (which we plan to do on October 1st), we would go bankrupt in a few months. We want everybody to be able to use our cutting-edge search, forever, so we need to come up with some business model to keep the lights on and let us scale the AI search.

The long-term goal: Our long-term goal is to charge companies a fixed fee each time they hire somebody. This way things are still free for job seekers, and our incentives are actually tied to people GETTING HIRED, not keeping users around on our website forever by building a crappy product like LinkedIn. The problem is that doing this is SUPER time consuming and requires working very closely with employers. But for the time being we really want to focus on helping job seekers as much as possible and not get distracted hiring a bunch of salespeople and selling employers a product.

Our short-term fix: We need a business model that lets us keep the lights on, make cutting-edge search available to everybody, and continue growing until we have enough resources to be able to start working with employers.

This is why we think the best solution is Ads + Tip Jar.

Ads are straightforward for us to turn on, they pay the bills, and it means we can still spend 99% of our time focusing on scraping every job on earth and making the best search experience possible. They would also have 5 guard-rails to maintain a positive search experience (only direct employers, clearly labeled, a small fraction of the screen real estate, and no easy-apply).

Most importantly: paying us would never improve a company's ranking in organic search results. We don't want HiringCafe search to become pay-to-play. Sponsored jobs would always be clearly separated from the actual search results.

But we also know that still ads suck and are annoying to see, so what we'd like is to give our community an option to support us, and opt-out of the ads. This is why we'd like to introduce the concept of a "Tip Jar". With a Tip Jar, you get the option to disable ads, a flair on the reddit community, we can add you to our list of supporters, because Talent Agent searches cost us real money to run, supporters would also get a larger Talent Agent search allowance. This would be on a "Pay-what-you-want" models, so you can pay as little a $5/month or as much as you'd like to support HiringCafe.

The goal isn't to put good search behind a paywall. We want everybody to get meaningful access to Talent Agent; Ads+Tip Jar would essentially help subsidize the cost of keeping it available to everyone.

Before we launch any of this, I'd love to get your feedback and see what you think. We'd only launch this if it seems like a good idea to our community, so please tell me if you have any concerns.

Hi All! This week we're working on letting you upload your resume and have that be factor in resume matching.

AI Search V2 Launch

Update on Agentic crawler

Thank you for the over 2,300 company career page submissions. Our agent is working through adding all of them, but is getting overwhelmed by the number of submissions. We are temporarily pausing guarantees on when we will be able to complete the submissions, but estimate on average within 7 day of submission.
