i need an honest opinion

recently me and my ex broke up. It was a pretty smooth break up at first but then it got bad we had a hard time not talking to each other. I was already pretty checked out of the relationship before me broke up so talking to him didn’t really affect me as much as it did him i told him we have to stop talking because it would be better for both of us a couple weeks went by and he texted me that he wanted to talk we called for a little bit and he basically said he wanted to start over i took this as strictly friends but i think he meant see what happened but i don’t really see him romantically anymore so then i had to go i thought the conversation was over but he asked if i can call him back when i was done i ended up being too tired and told him i would call him the next day on my 2 hour drive. on the drive i ended up listening to a podcast and a lot of music and didn’t end up calling him and i also forgot to text him. for the next couple days i was either super busy or super tired and calling or texting him honestly slipped my mind. 6 days past and i texted him apologizing for not calling him or saying anything. i understand why he would be sad and that i didn’t handle it the best way and that was ultimately insensitive of me but i feel like he is making it seem worse than it was. i guess i just wanted to ask if i was a terrible person for doing something like that?
also on top of all that when we were broken up he got mad at me for not inviting him to stuff because we share a friend group. personally i feel like it should be his friends responsibility and not his ex because not having to worry about him is why i broke up with him to begin with.
