Is my custom portrait shop still worth fighting for? Need honest feedback on my 1-year-old shop.

Hi everyone,

I’m a portrait artist, and since 2019, I’ve mostly worked behind the scenes taking on custom portrait orders for large, established shops on Etsy and Shopify.

A year ago, I finally decided to take the leap and build my own Etsy shop, collaborating with a few artist friends.

I’m reaching out to this community today because I would really appreciate your honest opinions and critiques. I know my shop is in the "red zone" (the custom portrait market is incredibly saturated right now), and since my shop just hit its 1-year mark, I want to evaluate where I stand.

I have a few specific questions for you:

  1. Is it still worth it? Do you think my shop still has potential, and is it worth fighting for in such a highly competitive niche?
  2. Does my art look like AI? I draw all of my portraits 100% manually, with absolutely no AI involved. However, I’m worried that buyers might think otherwise. What is your impression?
  3. How is the shop's layout? What do you think about the overall appearance of my storefront and listings? Does anything look confusing or hard to navigate?
  4. First Impressions: Please share your honest first impression when you click on my shop.

I am completely open to constructive criticism, so please don't hold back. I really want to make my shop better. Thank you so much in advance for your time and feedback!

Trying to cheer myself up

Hello Redditors, allow me to write here. I've been a custom portrait illustrator since late 2018.

I'm currently running a small portrait shop on Etsy. It's been a year, but the shop has only been active for about 8 months, with 12 sales and 4 reviews.

I used to be a portrait illustrator working for major stores. Now, I'm pursuing a solo career, managing my own Etsy shop.

This journey wasn't my own decision, but rather the pressure of circumstances. The work from major stores was dwindling, and I wasn't getting any more work.

I am also a freelancer on Upwork, I have 71 total jobs & 386 total working hours. My Upwork profile previously focused on custom portraits, but since I haven't gotten any clients in the past few months, I've decided to focus on custom portraits on Etsy and change the focus of my Upwork profile.

I changed my Upwork profile to wedding photo editing. I already have this skill, but I just need to refine it and learn a more efficient workflow. However, I don't have any raw photos to use to hone my skills more specifically.

This post gives me a bit of relief, because only here can I express what happened to me. I won't tell my wife or family about myself.

If anyone would like to visit my Upwork profile and Etsy shop, is on my profile.

Thank you for reading my post.
