Farmers who were forced to contribute food to the battlefield delivered it with great effort, but by the time it arrived, the rice and boiled beans had rotted in the summer heat.
The rotten rice was inedible, but the boiled beans had turned into natto. This is said to be a folk tale from Iwate Prefecture
