[Comic Excerpt] Tommy Monaghan calls back to his conversation with Superman, and gives someone a chance. (Hitman - Issues #34 & #58)

After finishing this series within the span of a week, I’m blown away. I’ve experienced a lot of feelings in my years of reading Garth Ennis’s works. The cynicism of The Boys, the nihilism of Punisher, even the sadism of Crossed, but nothing has come close to being as genuine and heartfelt as Hitman was.

The slice of life aspects like the guys just hanging around Noonan’s bar are so rarely made entertaining in other books, but here it captures a real feeling of chemistry, camaraderie, and found family. Combine that with the ridiculousness of the side characters, entertaining and engaging plots ranging from mob turf wars, nazi gun-demons, vampire invasions, and time traveling dinosaurs, it makes for a must read spectacle.

This callback to issue #34 and Tommy’s pep talk to Superman as the series was wrapping up, to me captures the heart of the book perfectly. Being a hero is not about being able to save every life or stop every catastrophe, it’s about giving people a fighting chance. In this moment, Tommy Monaghan lived up to Superman’s example and chose to be a hero when someone was in need. That’s about all we could hope for.

If this isn’t Ennis’s best series, it’s certainly my favorite. To steal a quote from the man himself in his epilogue to issue #60: “I've got the strangest damn feeling I'll never have quite this much fun again.”

What are the dumbest “mind games” you hate when trade negotiating?

My least favorite is my prospective trade partner throwing the player we’re discussing on the block mid-negotiation to “put the pressure on”. I’ve had it happen countless times across 10 leagues in the last 8+ years, and every single time it ends up with the deal falling apart and the player in question never getting dealt.

Another classic is the “used car salesman” negotiator, who will simultaneously tell you how much your player sucks, all the while trying to trade for said player.

What strategy bugs you guys the most when trading?
