Do promotion subs count towards monetization?
I know this sub generally has strong opinions about promoting videos, and I completely understand that most people here do not recommend it. I’m not asking whether YouTube Promote is good for a channel, whether promoted subscribers are “dead” subscribers, or whether it hurts organic growth.
My question is only about YPP eligibility.
I’ve been trying to find a clear answer, but I’m seeing conflicting information.
On YouTube’s official “Get started with YouTube Promote” page, it specifically says:
“Watch hours & subscribers gained through ad campaigns do not count towards YPP eligibility thresholds.”
That seems pretty clear.
But when you click through to the YPP overview/eligibility page, the requirements are listed as:
- Get 1,000 subscribers with 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months, or
- Get 1,000 subscribers with 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
That page explains what counts as valid public watch hours and valid Shorts views, including that ad campaign watch hours/views do not count, but I don’t see the same specific explanation there for subscribers.
To make it more confusing, I also found a YouTube Help thread where someone asked basically the same question and was told:
“Yes, subscribers gained through video promotion will be counted toward the monetization threshold.”
I’ve also read multiple Reddit threads (like 20 just today) where some people say promoted subscribers count and others say they do not.
So, ignoring whether promotion is a good idea or not: does anyone know for sure whether subscribers gained through YouTube Promote currently count toward YPP eligibility?
I promoted 1 video, and my subs have gone up about 100+. Checking my "earn on YouTube" tab corresponds fairly closely with subs gained. So what gives?
Edit: to make it even more confusing, under advanced mode metrics, you can break down between organic and paid views and watch time....but it is not available for subscribers????
Phnom Penh scouting mission
Coming to Phnom Penh at the end of the month for a short 2-week visa run / scouting trip to see if it’s somewhere I might want to live long term.
I haven’t been to Cambodia in about 10 years, so I’m looking for fresh input on the best areas to stay and good midrange accommodation options. I know this probably gets asked a lot, and everyone has a different idea of “midrange,” but I’d really like to hear personal opinions from people who know the city well.
Right now I’m considering areas like BKK and Russian Market, but I’m open to suggestions. My main goal is to get a feel for daily life and the overall vibe, not party or do tourist stuff. I don’t drink or go out much, so I’m mostly looking for the usual expat-friendly things: walkability, laid-back atmosphere, decent food/coffee nearby, gyms/grocery options, easy transport, and a comfortable place to work/rest.
For those of you who live in PP or have spent time there: where would you stay if you were doing it over again? Was there an area you discovered later and thought, “I wish I knew about this sooner”? Any hotels, serviced apartments, or guesthouses that made your scouting trip easier?
Budget-wise, I’m looking for something midrange rather than backpacker or luxury, but I’m flexible if the location is worth it. Somewhere around the 30 to 40$ a night or less. are there any short stay serviced apartments that would be worth checking out? NO air BnB thank you!
Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!
I’m interested in learning about the history and culture of bonsai / cây cảnh in Vietnam
As stated in the title, I’m interested in learning more about the history and culture of bonsai in Vietnam.
I’ll admit, before coming here I mostly associated bonsai with Japan, so I was surprised to see how common and beautiful these trees are in Vietnam too. Since being in Vietnam, I’ve noticed these beautiful miniature trees everywhere, and some of them are absolutely incredible.
Are there farms, shops, or local artists who grow and sell them? Or is it more of a common hobby that many people do at home?
I’d really love to sit down and talk with someone who makes them, learn about the history, and understand what actually goes into shaping and caring for them.
I’m currently located in Da Nang, so any recommendations nearby would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
The duality of child
laughed my ass off when these lined up in the middle of the night.
I love all the street art in Thailand. Anyone know who the artist is?
I loved wandering around in Thailand and just randomly coming across amazing street art.
Just a cool pic of Dragon Bridge in Da Nang, Vietnam, glowing with colorful lights over the Han River.
Tinkering/Innovating?
I am mostly retired with passive income. We are currently just doing the nomad thing but, my wonderful girlfriend and I have thought about coming to Cambodia, to teach part time.
But I also enjoy tinkering around and building random things. working with my hands and such, in my free time.
I was wondering about Cambodian import customs and the availability to import products. For instance I amateur hobby with carbon fiber and composites. Would I be able to order supplies from China (or wherever) to Cambodia without to much of a duty mark up? I also have a strong interest in EV's in general, and would love to build my own EV bike or something similar. I'm not looking to buy new parts (unless they are super cheap) or build a business more just hobby and tinker around.
It would be really nice to maybe rent a house in PP or SR and and be able to turn a wrench or two when i want. Is that something that is attainable? Or is importation too strict/expensive to make such hobbies improbable? Thanks!
Monks resting on "Monks trail". Thailand
Just a pic i took of some monks enjoying a rest while we were hiking "monks trail". It was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. They were so nice when we asked if it was ok to take a pic. There was a trail restoration and some kind of marathon or maybe a "fun run" during this hike as well. So many awesome nature places in Thailand.
