Lunch for 9 mo

I forgot to get a picture before he went for it, but this was a big hit. Mashed sweet potato and chickpeas with nutritional yeast, some steamed broccoli, and a bit of the canned salmon from the sandwiches his Dad and I ate. He basically cleaned his plate.

Tips for traveling with allergic baby?

We recently found out that our 9 month old is allergic to peanuts. He had a reaction to his first exposure (full body hives but no anaphylaxis) and we have now been to the allergist and had it confirmed. So far, thankfully, he doesn’t appear to have any other allergies including tree nuts. We’ll be starting OIT with him soon.

We have a two-week trip to Europe coming up soon. We’ll be flying from Toronto, starting in northern Italy and going to Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium and France.

Neither my husband or I have any food allergies so this is very new to us. We’ll have two epi pens with us and I plan to print out cards in different languages. Are there other tips we should know for international travel with a peanut allergy?

Plate vs ate

This was today’s lunch for our nine month old. Crumbled tofu, couscousaki pasta with a little store-bought marinara, and avocado. He has a recently-confirmed peanut allergy so allergen introductions have been a bit nerve-wracking, but he’s had soy in the form of tofu now a few times and has done well with it (and seems to love it). This was actually his first time having wheat with the pasta.

Should I dump all this milk?

I recently went to a conference out of province and my husband tagged along with our 8 month old so he could have him while I was in meetings. I brought my pump but also a ton of frozen breast milk packed in ice in a cooler bag.

Our flight was only 2 hours so I figured there’d be no problem, but we ended up sitting on the tarmac for 7 more hours because of storms that started right after we landed and made it dangerous for ground crew to be out.

The flight attendants kept bringing us ice but in the end my milk did start to soften. It never thawed completely and I got it back into a freezer as soon as we got to our hotel, but it did thaw partially.

I didn’t use any of it on the trip but I brought it home with me (frozen) and it’s sitting in our freezer now.

Does it all just need to be tossed? I’m having trouble finding a clear answer on partially thawed milk. I’ll be so sad to waste it all but I’m nervous about using it.

Lunch for 8 month old

Mashed potato and butternut squash, finely chopped omelet and some omelet strips for the first time because mom is terrified of giving him finger foods.

I’ve been experimenting with more texture in his mashed/pureed food and he’s doing well - he ate basically all of the chopped egg and the potato/squash mash. But I’m so nervous about giving finger foods. He was super into these omelet strips and I forced myself to smile and be encouraging but I’m afraid I chickened out and set them aside after a couple of gagging episodes.
