LoopOfTheWeek #4 - “Ascension” - | Live-Looping | Adam Ahuja

There is a special “partnership” between synths and symphony… like textures of the past and future, meeting in the present…

That underlying theme (past-present-future theme) is exactly what was reflected to me whilst completing this week’s composition…

To begin: as this music was coming together, the term “Ascension” arrived in my mind…

Then, out of interest, I went to re-visit the biblical passage on Christ’s ascension, to further explore…

To my surprise (and I say this with respect), I actually interpreted a portion of it with a tinge of humor! After Christ rose into the sky, a few robed men nearby said to apostles, something along the lines of (paraphrasing) - “why are you still looking at the clouds? - he’s gone!” It was almost as if this were kind of semi-regular occurrence, and they were conveying something like - hey buddy, c’mon, get on with it!

I know that is not the -absolute core- of the story, or even a fully contextualized interpretation of that event (as the men then spoke of further prophesies), but it functioned for me in a unique way: I realized that this music was my way of dealing with a kind of “phase 3” of death.

Two weeks ago, I made a track celebrating the life of my late Uncle: how he lived, and missing him being around (past). In last week’s track, I felt the shock of needing to seize the moment during the fleeting life (present). And this week, it’s more about allowing an actual departure to sink in, knowing that he is being taken care of in the next form and fashion (future).

I am realizing more than before that music has a way of telling me about parts of my own subconscious story. I am sure this is true for many others… music is not just about listening to the actual sound itself, but listening to that quiet purpose it is providing for you… do you hear it?

#LoopOfTheWeek is a weekly series, wherein I make a quick 1-2 minute composition in looping format, and share it in the week. I briefly explain the emergent process, mindset, inspiration, and/or concept behind that week. I look forward to staying in this creative groove and connecting with all of you ✌️

LoopOfTheWeek #3 - “Don't Z-Coast” - | Live-Looping | Adam Ahuja

Hi all! Third installment of the series...

About LoopOfTheWeek #3 - the phrase “Don’t Z-Coast” (“Don’t Zombie Coast”) spontaneously came up in conversation this week with a good friend and collaborator, Blamah Sarnor. TLDR: we were reminding each other not to mindlessly “zombie coast” through life, as there is something real happening in each moment…

We had been speaking about the shock of life events that can act to snap you back into gear… even a time of suffering, as difficult as it is, becomes a kind of proof of humanity: it reminds you that you're real - this moment is real - it’s all coming from a place that is as real as it gets. 🙏

At its musical core, this track has a melody designed around a rhythmic ostinato. I think, perhaps, that idea subconsciously came in as a kind of “pulse” representing continuity of attention (rhythm), whilst also being reminiscent of the reality of life’s natural variations (melody)… And, these days, I’m enjoying grit on the rhythm section… 🤛

The piece is really in 5/4, but I actually treated it as 5 bars of 4/4 on the looper, as the full phrase evenly repeats anyways at that length.

“Uncle B” by Adam Ahuja - | Rest Easy, Uncle B 🙏 | LoopOfTheWeek #2 |

This past week, we lost our dearest Uncle Bobby.  The devastation felt from his departure is too great to even put into proper words.  I miss him deeply, and at a future moment, will post a more detailed dedication to him.  Everything is emotionally overwhelming now.

Robert Pignotti was a tremendous human and lover of life.  Musically-speaking, whilst not having learned a specific instrument, he was a natural-born musician: I’ve never heard anyone play the steering wheel and car dashboard “drum kit” as amazingly as he did… the skill, attack, precision, everything.

Uncle B worked diligently, he loved deeply those for whom he cared, and he embraced every ounce of this life.  The world won’t be the same without him.

To my musician friends: you may or may not have known my uncle, but he probably knew you.  If we played together, even for just a bit, there is a very, very good chance he knew you and loved your playing.  No one loved music more than he did.

This composition was inspired by him this week.  As his passing began to sink in, various melodies and grooves came into my head, and I occasionally captured them as voice notes when I could throughout the chaos of the week.

Technically, this is also falls as the second installment of LoopOfTheWeek.  But it’s so much more.

I know this tune would be something Uncle B would enjoy.  It’s got a humorous hook that would have made him laugh, and a wacky funky ending that would have caused the same.  It also has more serious emotional depth at the piano break, which he would have also appreciated.  In other words… when making the track, I imagined him reacting to it, and watched how it reflected some of his essential traits: funny, jovial, deep, and complex.

I know he’s out there, lookin down, groovin out to it right now.

Rest easy Uncle B, and see you on the other side someday. 💛
