Update on researching the difference between the C220CDI and C250CDI, I found it!

After looking through an alternative Mercedes OEM part catalog I've finally figured out what the difference is between these cars.

Its not the turbo charger like some people suggested on my last post, it is 100% the injectors. The C250CDI utilizes injectors with the code 2887 whilst the C220CDI doesn't.

The OEM turbo codes are still identical between the two models. So it is literally just the injectors that are different.

For some reason the other catalog I used didn't display the 2887 code for the C250.

I'm gonna make an educated guess and say the difference between the 220 and 250 injectors is the nozzles and not the injectors themselves. Which if true is fantastic news because you can buy replacement nozzles for a fraction of the cost of complete injectors.

I'll try and test this theory in the coming month or two by swapping out just the nozzles for 2887 nozzles, bring it in for a remap and see what the results are. With any luck, she'll be in the C250's power range.

Stiff 6 speed manual gearbox?

As the title suggests, the gear stick in my C220 CDI has been quite "stiff" ever since I bought it a month ago

It feels like going into any gear it hits a wall that requires some force to get past then it goes into and stays in gear just fine.

Its the same with the car turned off, on and moving.

Should I just bite the bullet and get a second hand lower mileage gearbox before something catastrophic happens or could it be a less serious issue?

Im replacing the clutch in a couple weeks anyway, so id like to know before then so I can do the two jobs at the same time if its necessary.

Anywhere affordable in munster that will tint a rear window?

The factory rear window tint on my C220 is in pretty bad shape, lots of bubbles.

I had a go at tinting it myself and remembered why I gave up trying to tint my old A5. That shit is some sort of voodoo dark magic to do right.

I had a look at a couple sites but they seem awfully expensive? There's some places up near Dublin that are alot more reasonably priced but I dont fancy doing that sort of a drive just for a tint.

If anyone here is any good at tinting and in munster id be willing to throw some money your way to do it for me.

Hardware differences between the pre-facelift C220CDI and the C250CDI

I've been trying for some time now to figure out what exactly makes a C250CDI what it is compared to the C220CDI and I'm at a loss. Stock the C220CDI came with a bi-turbo putting out 170BHP whilst the C250CDI also has a bi-turbo but it puts out 204BHP. With a basic remap the C220CDI's tend to hover around the 200-210BHP mark whilst the C250CDI manages to get into the 240-250BHP range.

That's a fairly significant difference that I don't think can be explained by changes in the ECU, otherwise a remap would bring it to the same power level as the C250CDI.

They both use the same block, the OM651.

So I checked OEM injector codes for both models, they're identical. A 651 070 29 87.

Then I checked the turbo OEM codes, also Identical. The same bi-turbo is used in either a 125kw or a 150kw configuration. A6510901280 (Note, there's some variation in this number but they all correspond to the exact same unit produced over the years).

Those are the two main theories I've seen online but its all been speculation or just factually inaccurate information such as people claiming the C220CDI came with a single turbo, not a bi-turbo. I own a W204 C220CDI, yes it does come with a bi-turbo.

So if its not larger injectors and its not a larger turbo, where is the extra power coming from? I'd be surprised if the bottom end/head was modified for the C250, that seems like a substantial amount of extra R&D from Mercedes for an extra 30BHP that wouldn't justify the cost.

I'm almost half tempted to find a breakers yard that has an intact C250CDI and ask them if I can take the engine bay apart to find any differences to my C220CDI.
