Yeah, we kind of like this land - ja, vi elsker dette landet

Like yeah, it's your country, of course you bloody love it - the Finnish translation is so much better: sulle sykkää sydämemme, vuorten vetten maa, our hearts beat for you, the land of the mountains and the sea...

A reminder for the Anglo-Saxons in simple language

We not vikings, we not shore-robbers and rapists. We shamans and spell-singers, we hunter-gatherers, we not Scandinavians... :)

Paneme punki...

Kas teile meeldib klassiline eestlane 1980 ja 1990ndate alguse punk? JMKE, Vennaskond, Singer Vinger, Propeler etc? Olen soomlane, ja see kui ma 1980ndate lõpul teismelisena Rinnakkaisradiost JMKE:t kuulsin oli radikaalne kokemus... Ei sinine, ei must, ei valge ole ta. Vabandust, my Estonian fails me - and this absolutely crazy one is surely the greatest of the genre and one of the very earliest:

Yankee Doodle

Does your cuisine have meat jellies?

Does your country have dishes like this? I bet many European countries at least. Despite the challenging appearance this meat jelly is excellent on Finnish style full rye bread with brined cucumber (Finnish or Russian style) and tomatoes plus a touch of black pepper😍

Icelandic makes kind of weird sense...

It's not madly sing-song like rikssvenska and Norwegian and not like someone throwing up the red porridge like Danish - the words are long but then again words are supposed to be long. There are weird letters and sounds, but basically they are pretty pronounciable, thingurthirthurthdhrur etc, clearly easier without the silly letters - maybe that should be the common Nordic language, if not finlandssvenska, the most obvious and user-friendly solution?

Vi er røde, vi er hvide

My initiation to the World Cup was really back in 1986 - I supported England (god, what a painful choice) and hated the South American bloody cheaters (apart from the Brazilians) and that 5-1 against Uruguay, god. Laudrup, Elkjaer, Laudrup, goal!

Coolcations in the Nordic countries?

Our media is making noise that we can benefit from other people's misery... :) At the moment it is pleasant and warm in Helsinki and will also be in the Lakeland and Lapland. So would you consider a holiday here instead of your own countries?

Danish...

Just watching the replay of the night's huge Jukola orienteering competition. And YLE would interview the Swedish and Norwegian competitors in Swedish but the Danes in English - the reason obviously being that they can translate what the Swedes and Norwegians say into Finnish but that guttural gibberish is totally beyond their (or anyone's) comprehension... :)

Iron bird

Saturday was the graduation day here in Finland and this beautiful song was sung at my son's graduation. All honour to all the eddas and the sagas but we do actually have our own equally old mythology...

This bipolar crazy climate...

The first hot day in Helsinki, this mad burst of light and energy after the long winter, the brutal November sleet meeting you horizontally coming from work around the 5pm darkness. Yeah, North Americans and Canadians brag about their freezing weather - but how many of them actually live to the north of Anchorage?

Skånska... :(

I make fun of Danish of course, spiser rødgrød med fløde på Byrådsmandsgade etc, just ridiculous. But it is still a coherent language somehow. Whereas watching now Swedish murders on Viaplay (having it for the hockey world championships) and there's a case in Lund, and god how that dialect just brutally offends one's ears...

The sheer utter bliss of lingonberry crush

Yeah, cloudberry, cranberry, bilberry, whatever you have, rubus arcticus, totally nice Nordic berries. The fundamental thing simply is not too sugary lingonberry crush, the absurdly perfect accompanion for fatty meat, liver, tongue, game etc with boiled or mashed potatoes. Maybe even the Danes will approve?

This bursting into green, this explosion of nature and light after the long dark winter... Such a quintessentially Nordic experience! These latitudes are really otherwise rather sparsely populated elsewhere.

I was comparing Irish and Finnish historical experiences on another sub-reddit and wondered that it might be difficult to turn this into an insult. But you limp-wristed buggers, you can't even oppress colonial nations properly... 😞

It is weird how mentally similar us two nations are, plucky, defiant underdogs. But still the Swedish influence has been so much softer than the British - we sent our representatives to the riksdag for centuries, in the 18th century the riksdag proceedings would be halted in order to translate the proposals to the monolingual Finnish peasant representatives, there was no apartheid, the law was applied universally and of course in the Lutheran church we would have the Bible and sermons in Finnish. This said, it wasn't any picnic, we were a poor part of the realm and not speaking Swedish was a huge hindrance, but nothing like the Irish experience which was so bloody brutal.
