[meta] community updates, rules, and more

Hello everyone,

This is a long one, so grab a cup of chai and settle in. This post touches on meta stuff, some hate we've been seeing, a few ground rules, and some community updates. There aren't many hard rules here. This is mostly about how we treat each other.

"Manpower without unity is not a strength unless it is harmonized and united properly." Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel said that about a country, but honestly, it's just as true about a subreddit.

Looking at this community over time, one thing stands out to me: we have every kind of person here, and that's genuinely what makes this a community instead of just a subreddit. That said, we've also noticed a real problem, and it's about time we addressed it properly.

What r/Gujarat Is For

This sub is for anyone connected to Gujarat. It doesn't matter where you live now. If your roots are here, this is your space.

r/Gujarat exists so people can connect, discuss, share, and laugh together. It's here to celebrate the heritage of our state, the culture of our roots, the language we've spoken since birth, our land and tourism, and everything about Gujarat and its people, past, present, and future.

Hate vs. Criticism, Know the Difference

We've noticed a lot of hate directed at this community. Not at the subreddit, but at Gujaratis themselves. That's genuinely sad. But before we go further, let's be clear about the difference between the two:

  • Hatred is an intense, personal dislike directed at a person or group. It's usually irrational and detached from any specific action, standard, or fact.
  • Criticism is focused on faults, behaviors, or actions, measured against a real standard, moral, aesthetic, or factual.

This distinction matters for both sides, the people who receive it and the people who dish it out. If you want to read more on this, here's a good breakdown.

Gandhi, who was born right here in Porbandar, put it simply: "An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind." Fighting hate with more hate has never once made a community better. It just adds another angry voice to the pile.

We Are More Than One Story

Gujarat isn't a state with only one kind of people, one religion, or one category. It has real diversity. People have moved here, traveled here, and settled here from every background and every religion. When you say something about "Gujarat," you're also speaking about them and their distinct experiences.

Gandhi said it well: "No culture can live if it attempts to be exclusive." That applies to us too. This sub only works if everyone with roots here, whoever they are, feels like they belong.

To Our Non-Gujarati Members

We've noticed two kinds of non-Gujarati members here. One group is genuinely here to stay updated with news, follow current affairs, and enjoy the community. We're glad to have you.

The other group is here purely to spread hate, often for reasons that have nothing to do with actual criticism. Some hate the state simply because our PM was born here. Some hate it because a few of India's richest people are from Gujarat, or because Gujaratis are seen as business minded. They call us "rich" without knowing that there are still people here who don't get enough calories in a day, or children who are working instead of going to school.

That part isn't an exaggeration. NFHS-5 data found Gujarat among the worst performing states for child stunting, with anaemia among children rising sharply over five years. More recent NFHS-6 data shows barely 8% of Gujarati children aged 6-23 months receive an adequate diet, despite the state's wealth, a gap researchers have specifically flagged because economic prosperity clearly hasn't translated into child nutrition outcomes here. Child labour is a real issue too, particularly among migrant and tribal communities in south Gujarat, where field studies have found children working 10-16 hours a day, with many going without any schooling at all.

There's a line from Narsinh Mehta, one of Gujarat's own poets, that Gandhi loved so much he made it a daily prayer: "Vaishnav jan to tene re kahiye, je peed paraai jaane re", roughly, call someone truly good only if they feel the pain of others. That's worth sitting with before repeating the "Gujaratis are just rich" line, and honestly it's worth sitting with before hating on anyone else's home state too.

We're not sharing this to be negative about our own state. We're sharing it because "Gujarat is just rich people" is a lazy stereotype, and stereotypes are exactly what breed hate in both directions. Reality is more complicated than that, for every state.

If you fall in that second group and use this sub to spread hate, understand this clearly: there will be no excuses, and you will be banned.

What We're Asking From You

This community exists because of you. Never think you alone can't make a difference. If you're right, stand your ground.

  • If you see a post or comment breaking the rules, report it. The mod team will act on it, but it has to actually break a rule, not just be an opinion you disagree with.
  • If you see someone spreading hate against Gujarat or its people in this sub, report and walk away. Don't engage. Most of the time, they're just baiting you.
  • If you see it happening in another community, fact check first. If it's true, fair enough. If it's not, tell the original poster.

Debate Without Disrespect

Don't use slurs, gaalis, or inappropriate language while debating, discussing, or even arguing. We're capable of better than that.

And keep this in mind: you cannot change someone's mind if they're convinced their view is the only correct one. That's fine. Make your point, stand by it, and move on.

On Politics

Yes, political discussion is allowed here, news, opinions, all of it. What's not allowed is letting it turn into a fight or anything unethical. Everyone has their own opinion, and only the people who stay open minded and fact check actually grow from a discussion. Someone disagreeing with you doesn't make them your enemy. They're a human being first.

On Religion

Gujarat is home to many religions and castes, and discussing that is welcome here. Disagree respectfully if you must, but promoting your religion as superior, pressuring anyone, or disrespecting any faith, in any form, will not be tolerated.

No religion is above another. If you believe in God, remember, He is one, and everywhere. Gandhi is often quoted saying "God has no religion." We're Gujarati first.

On Language

This might be the thing other states admire most about us: we don't fight over language. Umashankar Joshi wrote it best: "Sada saumya shi vaibhav ubharaati, mali maatrubhaasha mane Gujarati," ever gentle, overflowing with richness, I was blessed with Gujarati as my mother tongue. We take real pride in our mother tongue while still respecting whoever we're speaking with. Let's not let that change.

A Quick Community Update

You may have noticed the mod team trying out a few new things over the last several days. That's intentional, we're actively working on ways to make this community better, and there's more coming.

We'd love your input on this. If you've got an idea, a suggestion, or something you think this sub is missing, tell us, either drop it in the comments here or send it over modmail. We're reading everything. And whenever there's something new to share, we'll keep you in the loop.

Last Thing

Everyone here is human. Be kind.

Thanks :)

100 Cities of Gujarat, Week 1: Dhoraji

Quick context : if you're just seeing this. We're running a weekly series where each week we pick a Gujarat city and try to find its most underrated nashta spot, think the bhajiya kaka on the corner, not some place with a Zomato page and 2000 reviews. Whichever spot the community votes for, someone actually goes and shoots a short vlog of it, and we pay them Rs 500 for the trouble, covers the food and the petrol, nothing fancy.

This week it's Dhoraji.

So, if you're from Dhoraji or have been there, drop your favourite nashta spot in the comments. Doesn't need to be popular, just needs to be good. A couple of things that'll help:

  • What's it called (if it even has a proper name/board)
  • Where roughly is it, any landmark nearby
  • What should someone order there
  • Roughly what it'll cost
  • Whichever comment gets the most upvotes becomes Dhoraji's pick.

Once that's decided, if you live near Dhoraji and feel like going, eating, and filming it (phone video is completely fine, doesn't need to be polished), just say so in the comments. We'll sort the rest and send Rs 500 your way for it.

That's it. No overthinking needed, just tell us where you'd actually take a friend for nashta in Dhoraji. next city will be posted on this sunday.

Otaku Bhaskar Vol.14 | July Edition

Otaku Bhaskar Volume 14 is here! 🍒

Another month, another volume down, and this one wouldn't exist without the community pouring into it. Section by section, here's what's inside and who made it happen:

Crafty Crew : This is our fan art showcase, a spread dedicated entirely to community artwork. Credit to u/Acceptable_Gas_2184, u/Unlikely_Dimension55, u/peoplehaterIRL, u/NeighborhoodCool98, u/divxsin, u/Own_Coffee2051, and u/Professional-Lake843 for the pieces featured this volume. Your art made these pages.

Charismactic Contributors: This section rounds up the best posts and discussions from the community each month. This volume features u/appleswineyyy for the Zom 100 post that resonated with so many of you, u/Charming_Ratio_7355 for spotting the Makima cosplay irony that had everyone talking, and u/Ctrl_Shift_Esc_ for kicking off the smoking-in-anime debate that took over the comments.

Community Letters : Brand new this volume. It's a space for you to talk back to us directly: thoughts, hot takes, rants, whatever's on your mind about anime, manga, or the community itself. Want to stay anonymous? Send it through DM or mod mail and we'll publish it without your name attached. Rather have your username on it? Drop it in the comments below this post.

Cracking Clues : Our quiz section testing how plugged in you are to what's happening in anime and manga right now. Give it a shot and see how you score.

A couple more things we want to put out there:

  • Have any ideas on how Otaku Bhaskar (or the sub in general) could communicate better with you all? We're listening.
  • Thinking about volunteering with the magazine itself, whether that's writing, art curation, layout, or anything else? Just say so and we'll take it from there.

And this goes for everyone, not just this month's contributors: if you write, draw, or create anything, we want to see it. Doesn't matter if you're just starting out or have been at it for years. Beginner fanfic, a doodle you're unsure about, a half-finished poem, send it our way via DM or mod mail. There's no bar of "good enough" to clear first.

Otaku Bhaskar only works because this community keeps showing up for it.

See you next volume. 🍦

Why your post was removed, and what r/surat actually allows

I want to make a post about the current Sonam Wangchuk situation, but the topic here is education, which is a big part of it overall. In our state, Gujarat, more and more children are losing faith in education. There was a survey, for accurate numbers, showing most students in Gujarat are leaving school, and it's honestly bad.

Gujarat topped every state in India for school dropouts in 2025-26, with around 2.4 lakh students leaving school this year, including roughly 1.05 to 1.1 lakh adolescent girls, marking a 341% jump from just 54,541 dropouts the year before (source: the economic times, source: SchoolServ). A recent UDISE+ report also found that only about 54.5% of Gujarat students even make it to Class 12 (source: InsightfulTake). And this isn't new either; Gujarat's secondary-level dropout rate has been running above the national average for years now.

I want to be clear before anyone assumes anything: I don't support CJP or any political ideology here. I only care about this because the topic is education. I don't support anyone, not even Sonam Wangchuk himself or the demand for the minister's resignation. My honest belief is that we need to fix things at the ground level first, and the top level will change automatically. That's the whole angle I'm coming from.

Now, why did the pfp change? Honestly, I (u/iam_urban) don't see the point in it. If I want to show support for Sonam Wangchuk, I'll join the protest as a person and follow the guidelines. He's on hunger strike in Delhi, demanding the education minister resign over the NEET paper leak, and that's a real thing people care about (source: BBC). But that's his fight to take on in Delhi.

This is a public community, every opinion matters, so where's my freedom of speech, why did mods remove my post? Fair question. But this community is for Surat. We allow local, area, and city politics, not the whole national level, please understand that. If you want to discuss national politics, that should be at r/india, r/IndiaSpeaks, or some other sub. We're simply following the rule, and won't allow any other posts on that topic.

So what can we, as Surat people, actually do? It's simple, honestly. We, as the public, vote. The people we vote choose the ministers. This should be a teaching lesson for us as members of society, that we don't choose the wrong people, we don't neglect small-level educational flaws. Remember, our kids are part of this educational system, we can't remove them from it. When you think about corruption, look at yourself first, ask yourself if you're not part of it. If you're not then good, why do one never stop it when one see it? Simple answer: "esi court ke chakkar mein kaun hi padhe."

Why are mods posting about this now? Because when people are in the heat of a moment, they tend to not understand the basics. Again, not targeting anyone, and we don't want to argue with you guys, you're like family here, I share every bit of my day with you all. Maybe some of you won't like this, maybe some of you think what I've written is complete bullshit, but this was my honest opinion.

Let me know what future you see for r/surat.

Peace out. Please galiya mat dena.

Otaku Bhaskar is starting a Letters section, and we want YOUR voice in it

Ever read something in an anime debate, a manga controversy, a con experience, or even just a hot take from another otaku and thought "bro I NEED to respond to this"? That's exactly what this section is for.

Starting from the next issue, Otaku Bhaskar will have a dedicated Letters to the Editor page. Think of it like a public reply section, but printed (well, posted) properly with your name and city.

- What kind of letters are we looking for

Reactions to anything we covered in a past issue, agree or disagree, doesn't matter
Your take on ongoing anime/manga industry drama
Opinions on the Indian anime community itself, cons, piracy, dubbing, fandom toxicity, whatever
Short personal anecdotes tied to anime or gaming culture
Even criticism of Otaku Bhaskar itself, if you think we got something wrong or missed an angle, say so

- How to send it

Drop your letter in the comments below, or DM us if you want it kept anonymous
Keep it short and punchy, 3 to 6 sentences is the sweet spot
Mention your city if you're comfortable, it adds flavor like real newspaper letters do
We'll pick the best ones for the next issue's Letters page

This only works if people actually write in, so if you've got an opinion sitting in your head about anything anime or gaming related, this is your chance to get it published. Comment below, let's fill this page up.

'Cells at Work!' Author speaks out on poor work conditions after the fact that she was sexually abused. (full story)

sources

During the past month, Akane Shimizu, the Japanese manga author behind hit series Cells at Work!, has been going public about abuse she suffered following her successful manga debut through a series of posts on X. In the latest such post, dated June 27, she apologized for worrying fans and explained that the reason why she decided to expose the details of what happened publicly was because she continues to face legal threats from the perpetrators’ side.

To give some background, back on June 15, Shimizu confessed to being diagnosed with depression, trichotillomania, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during the serialization of Cells at Work! During this period (between 2015 and 2021), she said she suffered financial abuse from a family member(s), sexual abuse, as well as secondary victimization by her family. Ultimately, she cut ties with her sister, who had inspired her to draw manga in the first place, and said she was left with deep emotional scars from the ordeal.

>— 清水茜|イエローフレイム (@yellow_flame_) June 27, 2026

This revelation about the author’s past came as a big shock to fans, but concerningly, Shimizu now claims to still face issues related to her abusers. In the new post, she says that for about the past six months, she’s continued to face legal threats from the perpetrator’s side, with implications that her work as a manga artist could be negatively affected. “Even regarding the sexual abuse, the perpetrator’s side filed for mediation, against my wishes,” she writes. “Furthermore, they made a claim stating, ‘We want a no-contact order imposed on the victim so that they cannot contact the perpetrator,’ seeking to disadvantage me. Even in a situation like that, I was told that considering the impact on my work, I shouldn’t let the case escalate to litigation, leaving me with no choice but to suffer in silence.”

The wording in Shimizu’s post suggests that she is likely involved in disputes with multiple individuals. She explains that she’s been sharing all this information in order to document the course of events and avoid any misunderstandings or unforeseen circumstances should things escalate in the future.
