Separated but living together?

Hi all-
I am looking for some stories or experiences of people going through similar situations…

I’m currently married with 2 young kids under 5. Things are not going well with my husband. He had a traumatic childhood and is in denial about it. He brings so much toxic thinking and behaviour into our relationship as he is modelling what he saw his parents do. I feel like I am constantly walking on eggshells- anything that I say will set him off into a bad mood. There are also the constant insults and belittling. There has been no physical violence at least. He keeps refusing therapy. I am doing 90% of all the house work and mental load. We both work full time jobs.

I want to divorce but we live in an area where he would probably have 50-50 custody (I am going to meet with an attorney to confirm).

I CANNOT let him have the kids 50% of the time. I don’t think they would be taken care of well enough and don’t trust his judgment when it comes to his toxic family dynamic…

At this point I am thinking of officially moving into another bedroom until the kids are older and divorcing once they are teenagers….

Has anyone been in a similar situation? How did it turn out? For you and the kids? Did it bother the kids that mom and dad had different rooms?

Thanks in advance for your responses!
