Blatant Favoritism

Idk if I should even post this bc idk what I could do about it. There is a fellow BHT at my center who has been there longer than me, but not been there the longest. She is very buddy-buddy with the BCBA’s, gets lots of attention at work (pictures of her posted around the center, constant compliments and conversations), and was also recently promoted to a position I personally don’t feel she is qualified for. She’s a nice person, but the favoritism bothers me. She’s hangs out with the BCBA’s outside of work, she is always losing her clients’ belongings and doesn’t fully understand tracking data/procedures, will not pay close attention to clients so she can play in the gross motor area, and other small things.

I feel like if I say anything to my supervisor or higher ups, I’ll be crucified. Everyone loves her and puts her on a pedestal, and yes she is a sweet person, but I don’t appreciate the blatant reverence.

Worth noting: this is not jealousy. I get plenty of praise at work and feel like I fit in, I just think this obsession w her at work is bordering on unprofessional.

2 client stories to brighten your day

Thought it would be nice to share how proud I am of my kiddos for these two things they did (all names are fake)

Client 1 was VERY antisocial with peers when I started. He would have a meltdown if we encouraged peer play, and would get escalated when we tried to facilitate peer conversations. Fast forward to Monday… client 1 has made insane progress and parents are even reporting he’s playing with his siblings more and having conversations at home. He IND went up to his peers several times and said things like “Suzy, do you want to play hide and seek?” or “it’s your turn to chase me, Bill!” The BCBA and I were amazed!!! It almost brought me to tears. Even when he doesn’t want to play with peers, he’ll say things like “I want to play by myself”. I am SO proud of this kid!

Client 2 made me crack up yesterday. He’s pretty good with basic signs, but we prompt him to use his AAC to more accurately tell us what he needs. It was the end of the day, and we were packing up our kids, and client 2’s BCBA was walking up to kids and asking what their name was. She asked client 2, and he IND walked across the entire room, picked up his device, brought it back to her, and said “GOODBYE”. He often tells her goodbye bc he associates her with demands, and it was really funny but also commendable to see him commit to telling her that lmao.

UCM for online master’s?

Hello! I’m currently a BHT and have been in the field for a bit, and I love it. I’m looking into becoming a BCBA, and have been perusing online grad school programs. I was interested in USF, but they require a supervising BCBA right off the bat. I am really interested in the University of Central Missouri (UCM), and every time I compare it to another school, UCM seems to come out on top (passing rate for BCBA exam, affordable, smaller class sizes). I am interested in the University of Kansas as well, but I don’t think the prestige of that degree is necessary. Do you know anything about the UCM online masters of ABA?

What do you like about your job?

Heyy :) thought this might be an uplifting question to get us back-to-work after the weekend. I do behavioral work with autistic children (ages 1-5) and I LOVE it!!

Reasons I love my job:
- I love children and working with them
- I have autistic friends/family (I am also on the spectrum) and am very interested in it. My job allows me to help/learn about people with autism every day. it’s very rewarding!!
- I love how my schedule is broken up: you only see a kid for a couple hours at a time, multiple kids a day, so the day gets broken up and offers diverse, stimulating work.
- it keeps me physical! Running, jumping, picking up kids or toys, crouching, crawling, you name it.
- it keeps you on your toes and inspires creativity

What do you like (or even LOVE) about your job?

Mom took her life in 2019

ETA: if I sound like an ass in this post, I’m sorry. My childhood was very complex. She withheld food from me, was very critical of my body, tore down my accomplishments to my face but would use them to brag on FB/at work, told me I “was never meant to be in her life”, frequently told me how unlovable I was and that no one could ever possibly want to live with me, would whip me with a belt, would threaten to shave my head or have me locked in a hospital, drove drunk with me and my siblings in the car as kids, etc etc. She was clearly super unwell, and you can hopefully understand why it took some time for me to round a corner on my feelings for her / her death.

Original Post:
My mom was, I’ll be honest, bonkers. She was sooo mentally ill, emotionally violent and toxic, and had on/off substance issues. She also came from a cold family. Before she died, I was her only daughter (since her passing I am now a man, woohoo). She was very conservative and didn’t approve of my “wokeness”, and certainly would not have liked my transition. I think being her only daughter put a lot of pressure on me, and is why she was so particularly antagonistic towards me. We did have some good moments, but they were few and far between, especially as I got older. I myself am quite mentally ill, and have gained a lot of empathy for her in recent years.

I do wonder about her. After she died, I’d have dreams about her, not so much in recent times tho. The ones I remember most vividly were

  1. She was out to lunch with my dad at the beach, they both seemed so content, like nothing was wrong
  2. A more recurring type dream where she’d randomly come back (was alive) and we all told her we need her to stick around (even tho in reality, her mental illness took a huge toll on the family, and her death was honestly seen as a relief)
  3. This one means a lot to me. I was dreaming about having dinner at a restaurant and someone and I got in a fight. My mom showed up and escorted out into her car. She drove me down a long, straight road, it was the blackest night ever, and all I could see were warm, orange lights in what I’m assuming are the windows of houses we passed. All I could see was the dim illumination of the dashboard, the orange dots of light, and felt an immense sense of peace.

She was super religious, and I don’t particularly care for any religious anecdotes, but I just want to know if you get anything from her. I know her favorite color and flower, the music she liked, her sense of humor — I know a lot about her. Just was curious to see what people could feel. Ty in advance.
