Looking For Bell Work Ideas for At-Risk Writers

Howdy! I’m going into my 3rd year of teaching and it’s also my 3rd year of teaching this foundations of writing class that helps at-risk 9th graders learn to write properly. Last year we redid the curriculum but our bell work focused a lot on suffixes/prefixes/root words. These are helpful, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think they necessarily need it for writing and it would be more useful for reading. I’m trying to redo our bell work to help students these students learn and practice writing craft strategies, but with being so new still I’m struggling to come up with a structure that helps scaffold the writing a sentence process so that each week builds off of the last. I’ve done a ton of research and my brain is too full of information so I want to see if theres any suggestions for how you would progress this process:)

Thanks!!

im so afraid of falling i cant skate alone

howdy! so, about 3 years ago i got my first pair of skates ever from my boyfriend after i expressed interest in it. he’s a big skateboard guy, so he got me all the stuff: helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, and the skates. but… i have used them maybe twice in those years.

it’s not like i dislike skating, i think its fun and i really want to try it again… but i cannot stop overthinking it. my ex bf bought me a skateboard maybe 5 years ago and i used that for a bit but i had no protective gear so when i fell i fell HARD. i ultimately stopped because i got so hurt and started to get afraid of being hurt. because of that, i feel too afraid to pick up skating again on my own because i worry i’ll get too hurt and wont be able to get help if im alone. i suggested to my bf that maybe he can come with me until i get comfortable with falling safely but its not the most realistic since i have the summer off but he doesnt.

has anyone else experienced this? does anyone have any advice, motivation, or reassurance they could provide?
