As a South African, I often see people asking whether it’s safe to visit South Africa.
The answer is the same as many countries: be aware, use common sense, and know where you’re going.
South Africa is one of the most beautiful and diverse places on earth. From safaris and mountains to vineyards, beaches, and vibrant cities, there’s something for everyone. Millions of tourists visit every year and have an incredible experience.
A few practical tips:
• Use Uber or reputable transport services, especially at night.
• Stay in well reviewed accommodation and established tourist areas.
• Keep valuables out of sight and avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics.
• Carry a local SIM card so you always have data and navigation.
• Use ATMs inside malls or busy public areas.
• Trust your instincts. If a situation feels off, leave.
• When driving, research your route beforehand. The shortest route is not always the best route.
• Keep friends or family updated on your location when travelling.
Most importantly, don’t let headlines stop you from experiencing an amazing country. South Africans are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet, and you’ll often find strangers willing to help when you need it.
My personal recommendations:
📍 Johannesburg: Sandton, Rosebank, Melrose Arch, Montecasino, Gold Reef City, and the Cradle of Humankind.
📍 Cape Town: Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, Camps Bay, Constantia, Franschhoek, and the Cape Winelands.
📍 Safari: Welgevonden, Kruger, and the many incredible private game reserves across the country.
📍 KwaZulu-Natal: Oribi Gorge, Durban’s coastline, and the South Coast.
South Africa isn’t perfect, but it’s unforgettable.
