Looking for a game to "live in"

Hi, sorry in advance as I'm sure this has been asked countless times but I've yet to see a suggestion in other threads to scratch my itch.

I'm looking for a game to basically live in, character creator or customizer, having to do mundane things as well as combat, but I don't want the combat to be the most optimal way of progressing through the game. Exploring, trading, finding etc. should excite me. Also, I know this is highly unlikely, but managing a shop (via crafting and/or delegating) would be awesome. Don't really about the genre, or POV, I just wanna boot up the game after 6pm and be that character.

Thanks!

I want to play a game with deep exploration

I’d love to play a game with a large map where there’s lots discover. A game with different climates and biomes, anything that feels like there’s a lot to see and do. I don’t mind combat and I like games that have farming/crafting/survival elements. Any of those would be nice.

I have a Switch 1, Steam Deck and Macbook for options to play on. Thank you!

Games I’ve already played that may fall into this category: Palworld, BOTW, TOTK, No Man’s Sky

Looking for a great shooter to sink my time into – FPS or TPS, singleplayer or multiplayer

I'm looking for a new shooter to really sink some time into.

I'm open to both FPS and TPS, and both singleplayer and multiplayer games. Realistic gameplay is preferred, but it's not a must — the most important thing is that the shooting actually feels good and the game is fun.

I'm mainly looking for a premium game that I can actually own and keep playing, rather than a F2P/live-service game that could eventually shut down and take the experience with it.

Things I like:

Great gunplay

Fast-paced action

Good progression / unlocks / customization are a plus

Multiplayer is fine, especially TDM-style modes with relatively short matches

Singleplayer campaigns are also welcome

Open-world shooters are a huge plus

Character creation/customization would be amazing, or female operators

I'm fine with older games if the community is still active

I've considered some Call of Duty games, especially Black Ops 7, but I've heard mixed things about the current player base. I'm also open to completely different franchises.

If you could only recommend ONE shooter that you think is genuinely worth getting into in 2026, what would it be?

I'm basically looking for that "one more round / one more mission" feeling. And I want to grind, Account Level or something.

Any games with a good sense of progression?

Ive already beaten elden ring and its dlc so many times its not a challenge anymore, i bought cyberpunk a month ago. Spent 200 hours on it since.. safe to say im a sucker for a game with a good perk system and a grindy aspect to it. I need more games so i can continue the cycle of grinding side quests, getting OP, speedrun main quests, repeat. Thought about monster hunter or witcher 3 but idk if theyd scratch my brain the way cyberpunk or elden ring did, please help me im going insane

Games with an ocean world and ship/base customization

I’ve played both Dredge and Subnautica recently, which has gotten me in the mood for some more ocean themed games. Looking for any combination of the bullet points below:

  1. open world type exploration
  2. customization of a ship, an land base, or both
  3. some kind of story element
  4. survivalist aspects like hunger or rest
  5. forgiving in either death or difficulty settings

Sorry if that sounds kinda specific lol, I looked around a bit online myself but wanted to see if anyone here had suggestions too :)

Looking for challenging exploration

I'm looking to immerse myself in a 3D game world or story where getting from A to B is the challenge. Old or new.

I want to get lost in dense forest, trapped in complex caverns, stuck in ancient ruins.

My favorite moments in gaming are when I'm hunting for secrets, or solving environmental puzzles, or climbing through, up, and around things to get to hidden areas. When I have to stop and think about how to get somewhere, and be observant.

A 3D version of La Mulana would be ideal. Something without white or yellow paint telling you where to go.

Parts of games I've enjoyed the most:

Tomb Raider (challenge tombs)

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine (most levels)

Prince of Persia series (but too easy)

Thief series (sneaky parkour, loot/secret hunting)

Zelda games (harder dungeons)

Only restriction is I game on a PC without the internet, so it has to be on the GOG store or have a downloadable installer.

Edit: I'm looking for a first-person game ideally, but 3rd person could also work if done well enough. Games that are 2D in exploration, no matter how well done, don't scratch the itch for me. Needs to use the 3rd dimension for enough complexity.

I want an experience like im megumi from jjk and get to chain all these diffrent animals/beasts/creatures toghether. Been having a rly hard time finding something like this.

Looking for an emotional story game to absolutely destroy me

Platform doesn't matter unless it's a PS5 exclusive (since I don't have a PS5)

I am in the mood for a game that'll wreck me. Leave me sobbing like nothing else. I find that an emotional game is leagues above an emotional show or movie or comic because of the interactivity and because it can get away with a way longer runtime.

Examples are OMORI, Until Then, the Danganronpa series to an extent (mostly V3). But yeah mostly OMORI and Until Then.

Music is a really important part of games for me and if a soundtrack gets the tears streaming down my face (alongside the story) I absolutely want to experience it. Something story first obviously, I don't mind lackluster or basic gameplay.

R.E.P.O.

We like scary games, we've looked at games like Peak, Chained Together, Shift at Midnight, but haven't pulled the trigger on any of them, but thats the sort of genre we're looking at. Any recommendations appreciated :)

Looking for a game that focuses on aesthetic upgrades to your base/town/stuff etc. without focus on customization

So I know what you’re thinking: “Oh, like a town builder?”

No. I mean a game where the more you play and do objectives, the better the place becomes. Things get fixed, people return, the place gets more active. Games with major quests or parts that focus on improving a location, while not just giving you a set of design tools to have you design them to your hearts’ content. They’re good but they’re not what I’m after.

Examples I’m basing this off of:
- Monteriggioni from Assassin’s Creed 2
- Colony 6 from Xenoblade Chronicles
- Luigi’s Mansion (Clear the house of ghosts, lights go on, better house, yay)
- Tarrey Town in BotW, but NOT in TotK.

Have all platforms except Xbox. It’s not my jam.

Anime Style games that can be readily paused (PC / Switch 2 / Mobile)

Hey everyone, I'm looking for games that are anime styled that can be readily paused / save points are frequent. I've already played the Persona games (and I wouldn't really describe them as ones that can be readily paused). JRPGs would be nice along with any other anime-style game, I'm not too picky. I want to stray a little bit away from visual novels because I consider those to be a whole different medium. PC / Switch 2 / Mobile are preferred, but I try not to get Switch 2 exclusive games because of how expensive they tend to be.

Free games are fine as well

Series-like games that captivate you entirely like Detroit: Become Human or The Pillars Of The Eart?

Looking to detach my brain completely. that means I need something that engages me as much as possible, so:

- a cheap trill, like, the lower the better

- a series-like game

- 2D/3D (no minimal pixel art)

- possibly with all lines dubbed

- story-driven

- your choices make the story

- engaging gameplay that gets you focus comple on the game

- not a static game (like VNs etc.)

- no open world exploration (especially endless ones)

- no GDR battles and stuff

- no first person POV (at least if the game’s circumstances are not stimulating enough)

- full of cutscenes

- genres I love: dystopian, historical, realistic

- genres I don’t dig: horror, fantasy

(already played game that fit the description: Deponia)

(games that fit the description but whose premise didn’t intrigue me: Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, Life is Strange (I actually played it but the setting are too cliché to capture me), The Walking Dead Series (the art style doesn’t capture me at all :())

(games that could fit the description but I haven’t tried yet: Assassin’s Creed series, Dispatch, Stray Gods)

Thank you in advance my ladies🥹💖

Looking for a game that makes my character's life a daily struggle

Hello there! This is a self-repost of mine. I'm looking for a game where I have to really struggle in order to achieve a decent living.

I'll try to explain myself a little better: I've played Skyrim and Oblivion recently. This time, I added several mods that would make the game both more realistic and challenging: economy mods, basic needs, jobs, taxes and that sort of things. The harder it was to survive and dedicate time to fulfill my needs and make compromises, the more fun I had. Above all, I tried to keep it as much realistic as possible. Like, I didn't go out killing dragons to make money, but hunted rabbits and deers for instance, trying to get my character in a repetitive, yet immersive loop.

Also, I tried The Sims 3 again, modding it so that paying taxes, fulfilling needs, getting decent jobs and buying stuff was way much harder. Basically, I started from scraps, hoarding as much free and crappy stuff as I could find, building me a basic shelter with the little money I was able to gather until I could reach a decent living.

I've also played Obenseuer and Hobo Tough Life, which really scratched the itch. I really, really loved the aspect that I could be a true hoarder In there, trying to get to a decent living by adding a shabby-chic piece of furniture at a time. I think "change: a homeless survival experience" might fall under that category

I'm looking for other similar games (life simulator, survival or RPG) with economy systems that lets me do the same: start with very little to live by and make very small progresses each day, until I can get to a decent point, but after a lot of sweat has been shed. Abandonware are also welcomed!

Thank you in advance!

PS: I've also played project zomboid so I guess that masterpiece's out of the picture

Looking for game recommendations for my non/new to gaming mum

Hi! I’ve been trying to get my mum (58) into gaming recently, I tried her with a mobile game called Hay Day and she’s OBSESSED. She really enjoys the farming, taking care of animals and fulfilling orders part of the game, she’s not huge on the decorating part but is slowly getting into it.

Now she’s wanting to maybe try a new game, but a lot of the usual stuff I’d recommend she doesn’t like the look of. For example, she doesn’t like the look of Minecraft or Stardew valley because of the art style, she doesn’t like the pixle-y or blocky style of it.

With all this info, what would be some games you’d maybe recommend? Mobile, switch and Xbox game pass games are all options for us, I’m maybe going to try her on Palia since I’ve heard good things about it, but any recs would be appreciated!!! Thanks so much :)

Building an off-grid simulator with custom wiring & solar grids. What homesteading mechanics would you love to see?

Hey everyone!

I am currently developing a Cozy Off-Grid Life Simulator where you can slow down, disconnect from modern chaos, and build a self-sufficient homestead, either solo or together with friends in multiplayer!

I really want to hit that sweet spot between relaxing, cozy vibes and deep, satisfying off-grid mechanics.

Here is what I have already built so far:

  • Co-op Multiplayer: Gather, build, and chill around the campfire with your friends.
  • Modular Building System: Full snapping mechanics for constructing houses, cabins, and structures.
  • Cozy Survival Loop: Woodcutting, foraging, fishing, cooking hearty meals, and tool crafting.
  • Deep Electrical Grid: Photovoltaic solar panels, inverters, power storage, batteries, socket wiring, and cable throughput limits (e.g., using the wrong wire or bypassing the inverter causes overloads or blown fuses).

While having a functional electrical system with solar and batteries is great, I want to expand the homesteading lifestyle even further.

If you were playing a game like this, what cozy or realistic off-grid mechanics would you be most excited to see?

Some features I am currently considering:

  1. Water Systems: Rainwater harvesting, filtration systems, and plumbing for a cozy hot shower or garden irrigation?
  2. Alternative Energy: Windmills, micro-hydro power from a nearby stream, or wood-fired water heaters?
  3. Farming & Food Preserving: Greenhouse gardening, canning or pickling for winter, and composting?
  4. Seasons & Comfort: Wood-burning stoves, insulation, and staying warm and cozy during harsh winter nights?

What are your personal must-haves or dream mechanics for a cozy off-grid game? I would love to hear your ideas and feedback!
