A site of OSM trails broken up by terrain that can be filtered, sorted, compared and visualized by grade

Seeing the climbs of two routes side by side is awesome especially when planning or prepping for a hike/race. I really wanted to be able to put routes side by side and against my own terrain history (uploaded from strava)
I also really like that OSM landmarks/POIs are brought in to appear automatically on the profile. Thought some of you here would find it interesting! Here's the link to this local comparison page, but you can search the database here

Happy 17th Anniversary to Brand New's Greatest Album. A Case For Daisy.

Happy anniversary to Daisy.

Tl;dr: Daisy is the only of Brand New’s albums where two of their core identities as a band come together and blend at the highest level. What was for the band a representation of their purest form at their peak of songwriting and musicianship, fell onto unwilling ears and suffers in reputation because of it’s purposeful sound. A Failure by Design, if you will.

Look, I’m sorry it’s such a long read but I really wanted to find a way to get out all my thoughts about Daisy and how I could try to convince as many people to listen to a record that I not only think is  Brand New’s best album but a Top 3 (and not third) generally in rock music.

To do that I used a spreadsheet of every Brand New album, song, lyric, credit, review, stat and music sheet, popped them in a few python scripts, looked at what came back and tried to write a convincing argument that I assume after reading the title I already have 1,000 people up in arms saying ”But wait a minute tdagarim is WAY better than Daisy”.

Which is fine, you can think that. I just disagree and this essay is an attempt to explain why.

I love this album - the essay might hold a little bias. I might be projecting here and there. I might make a terrible argument that you end up hating.

That’s all fine. My biggest goal with this is to have you take a break out of your day to read about something written specifically for you, a brand new fan. To let us all show some appreciation for Brand New for a moment, and sit with an album that gets overlooked in the company of it’s sibling releases.

I hope you have fun.

PS: If you liked my last post about the Deja astronaut, I updated it and made it it’s own essay on that same site here.

Choosing between two runs

I wanted to share how i’ve been planning my upcoming races and runs just in case there is anyone around interested in doing the same

Basically what i wanted to see initially was a side by side comparison of routes that i was thinking about (slide 2) which shows me which one out of the two would be easier but the thing that was missing is knowing “but is it easier not based on another route, but based on my current training.

Those then are the following slides - a comparison for any given route based on your current training broken down by terrain and your most recent performance.

It’s been working great and i highly suggest this method of planning and comparing routes if you’re one like me who likes to prepare and get nerdy with routes!

Nstride - smarter trail running routes with climb detection, map animations and comparisons

Nstride provides deep analysis routes and races through gpx files: elevation profiles, grade-classified segments, climb and descent detection, difficulty ratings, section-by-section tactical advice, 3D animations and maps.
Runners can upload their own activity data to build a personal pace profile, which powers finish-time predictions for any route in the library, create their own route with live terrain feedback and compare routes side by side.

For hikers and runners who want to explore and plan for trails and races without a monthly subscription

‘Chunking’ big route like the western states

I’ve been going through some posts from athletes doing western states today and multiple times I heard mention of how thinking about a race by ‘segments’ rather than thinking about total distance is something they try to do. I do that too and I know other runners that have their own version of this in different forms like aid station to aid station or climb to climb or by time like one hour at a time.
Thinking about this and I’m curious how others are structuring their long runs. Do you chunk segments while you’re planning for a run or day of based on how you feel? Do you use terrain features, time intervals, nutrition windows?

Thoughts on climb detection on 3D route flyover animation?

I love stravas and relive’s flyover animations but i don’t really like how i couldnt add notes or callouts (like water sources) or anything to them or view them easily/for free without completing a route

i used to make these animated videos all the time in after effects and now i have a whole ass database of routes that are using that same engine to make the animations automatically make videos for any route globally

not selling anything, it’s free but i’m just posting it here in case anyone here also likes looking at routes on maps with some some helpful context 🙌🏆

Free flyover animations for any route

Ive been enjoying creating 3D animations from my runs in after effects using geo layers 3 and I also like strava’s and relive’s flyover video features so i created an engine that could automatically create an animation from any route while creating annotations along the way like water sources, aide stations, climbs and descents! Drop a comment if you’d like the link to generate your own routes!

Using flyover animations for run planning

hey all, I wanted to share how I've been planning for my upcoming runs or just exploring runs that I think would be fun to train for.

I have always really enjoyed the flyover animation feature in strava after a run or even apps like Relive to visualize the trail on a terrain-focused map because I've found it helpful to 'see' big hills or help contextualize the area throughout the trail.

Because of that I started making these little animations myself where I could also annotate throughout the video - it was really complicated for me since I'm only fairly experienced with After Effects and Geo Layers 3 with plug ins like freeform. But the videos are sick and I put a few on YouTube but my biggest problem was that each video took me like 3-5 hours to make - more if I wanted it to be really good. So that wasn't working.

So basically what I did was I built the camera/keyframe animation that I was doing in After Effects into a database that can automatically generate animations with those annotations like aid stations/water stops/waypoints/climbs and descents. It works great and I wanted to share with anyone else who like to see their trails visually like that. I know self promotion is hated here and we're all sick of people's shit apps so I'm not going to drop it, but it's free and you don't need to download or sign up to see it so drop me a dm and we can talk more about it if that's you!
