Shipped something new on PassTIA this week: full CompTIA Tech+ (FC0-U71) support — practice questions, flashcards, a free demo, and exam simulation.

A bit of context on why this one took longer than I expected.

Tech+ is CompTIA's newest entry-level cert, and it's structured differently from the others — 6 domains instead of the usual handful, covering everything from IT fundamentals to basic security to database concepts. That meant the question bank couldn't just follow the template I'd built for A+, Network+, Security+, and Data+. I had to actually map out the real exam objectives domain by domain, then build ~480 original questions against that structure, plus 100 flashcards and a demo set, before any of it touched the app.

Then came the part nobody sees: wiring it into everything that already existed. Exam timing logic that assumed every cert was 90 questions / 90 minutes (Tech+ is 70/60). A progress-tracking system with hardcoded category lists for every other cert. A resource hub, a footer, an FAQ, email templates — all the places a new certification quietly needs to exist once you actually ship one.

I am absolutely fuming.

We just got rejected by the App Store. Again. For the same tired, anti-competitive reason: The Apple Tax.

We spent weeks stripping out direct transactions for PassTIA and moving our "Get PassTIA Plus" flow to an external browser link to give our users a choice. The result? Apple blocked us anyway. They don’t just want a "safe ecosystem"—they want a 30% cut of everything you build, even if they didn’t build it with you.

Here is the reality of the "Enclosed Garden":

Forced In-App Purchases (IAP): Apple’s guidelines essentially state that if you sell digital content, you must use their system. Why? So they can take a massive "commission" for doing nothing more than hosting a binary.

The "Cross-Platform" Trap: Even though PassTIA is built to serve users across the web and mobile, Apple demands that we implement their billing system—likely so they can take a cut of subscriptions they didn't even earn.

Bureaucratic Red Tape: They’ve flagged us for including frameworks (PassKit) we aren't even using, and then rejected us for "IAP products not submitted"—even though our entire goal was to move away from their predatory system.

It is a shakedown, plain and simple. They hold your user base hostage unless you agree to inflate your prices to cover their fees. How are startups supposed to survive when a trillion-dollar company demands a huge chunk of your gross revenue just for the "privilege" of existing on a smartphone?

When does the gatekeeping end? When do we start prioritizing founders and users over trillion-dollar margins?

If you're a dev fighting this same battle, I see you. It’s time we stop calling it an "ecosystem" and start calling it what it is: A Monopoly.
