Soooo I bought an S-Works Tarmac frame set today. I’d been procrastinating over the standard Spesh and the S-Works and plumped for the S-Works because I liked the colour and it was on sale. The Spesh ships with a stem, the S-Works doesn’t. And now I can’t find a Tarmac stem in 80mm anywhere in the UK.

Turns out the S-Works stem is discontinued because there’s a new Roval one coming out. ETA is sketchy.

Has ANYONE got an 80mm they swapped out? Or knows of a shop with one?

The issue is as follows:

The Wahoo Roam 3 can not maintain a stable connection with the Wahoo Speedplay Power pedal IF another BLE device, in my case the Wahoo TRACKR Radar light, is also paired.

On its own, the Roam 3 and Power pedals work as expected - the device remains connected both on the Wahoo app and on the Roam 3 itself and is perfectly usable.

However, the second you pair another BLE device, the Power pedals (and JUST the pedals, not the other BLE devices) run a cycle of connecting for about 20 seconds and then disconnecting for about 20 seconds.

On the Roam itself, this is demonstrated by first the cadence figure vanishing to be replaced by dashes and simultaneously the power figure stalls, then a few seconds later the power figure drops to zero. After about 20 seconds it reconnects, and the cycle starts again.

On the app, you can watch in the list of connected devices the Power pedal disconnecting, attempting to reconnect, then connecting in real time.

The issue is easy to reproduce, is repeatable, is consistent, and there appears to be no user fix.

Wife has the same device, and it works with Stages power meter, TRACKR Radar, Di2, and her heart rate monitor (previously Whoop, now a 4iiii model).

Wahoo are aware of this issue. I raised a ticket, which initially had lots of superficial first line support suggestions like charging the unit and reseting and repairing everything - and I did indeed do everything they suggested including some of the internet hacks like trying to force an ANT+ connection. Nothing worked. The support ticket was in turn turned into an email conversation as Wahoo are aware of the issue and they have a dev ticket in their sprint. In fact, their support reply was as follows:

“We can confirm that this issue is currently recognised internally and is being treated with the highest possible priority by our development teams. The bug has been classified as a blocker within the ongoing DEX sprint, meaning it is considered a top-priority issue and is actively impacting the prioritisation of other development projects while resources are focused on identifying and implementing a resolution.”

This was May 15th, now a whole month ago, and there is still no resolution. Indeed, MY original support ticket was the 21st April. So it’s closer to 2 months.

Can confirm none of these firmware updates resolve the issue, nor have I received an email from Wahoo to update me of the fix as promised.

In order to run my power pedals, Radar light, heart rate, and Di2, I’ve bought a Garmin 540 in the sale and it works ABSOLUTELY fine with all devices attached.

Now let me be clear: I do love Wahoo products. As a UX/UI designer, I appreciate what Wahoo has done compared to Garmin. It’s infinitely easier to use and a great device. However, this situation is pretty untenable now. I’d understand it if we were talking about Wahoo talking to say Stages or 4iiii and there being issues. But these are products within Wahoo’s own ecosystem. And working in software myself I understand that the nature of bug fixing is a “how long’s a piece of string” type deal. But we’re 2 months into ownership and I can’t use my Wahoo pedals with my Roam 3, not properly. Wahoo offered to let me send it back and get a full refund. But I said no, because I want to believe Wahoo can resolve this.

I don’t expect Reddit to have a solution, but I’d be interested to hear if anyone else has had the issues and what they’ve been told by Wahoo.

But would love to know if I’m holding out for nothing and I’m better off just selling the Roam and keeping the Garmin. I’m not selling the Power pedals because I love Speedplay and swap the pedals between bikes.
