BMW tech here with an affinity for taking in “strays”. Client was moving to Texas and it needed some module repairs & a voltage regulator (any other BMW techs here I’m sure you know what module I’m talking about”.

Fixed those, and slapped our iKamper on top for a nice overnight trip to the coastal range just outside Portland. Did a fantastic job and definitely earned its place in our lives.

ModXO w/Prometheus & Cerbios 3.1.0

128MB RAM upgrade

1TB Crucial SSD w/Startech adapter & 80pin IDE cable

1.0 GPU heatsink w/Noctua fan (fan header re-installed to the board)

Noctua fan for the rear

Clock capacitor replaced

Cleaned & lubricated DVD drive & replaced drive belt (Thompson drive, still reads good condition discs)

Comes with a matching Halo controller, power cable, and standard AV cables

Flaws include one broken standoff, one bottom screw support that aligns the screw to the top case is damaged, and I had to tape the bottom stickers back down as they were peeling in the corners. None of this is visible from the outside of the console only when you take it apart do you notice these flaws.

Finally ran out of mods!

Like the title says, I’ve finally run out of things to modify on my favorite console of all time!

Flippydrive w/ethernet & 256GB MicroSD (disc drive still works!), Noctua fan, internal USB-C power, Laser Bear blue retro & Ethernet adapter (because why not two ports??), matching Game Boy Player, matching GCMCE memory card (not pictured), and two matching OE spice orange controllers with 8bitdo Bluetooth conversions (also not pictured).

Spice orange was such a forbidden fruit growing up and I envied it, but with adult money I’ve clearly had a great time! I’ve seen some custom jewels on Etsy…been thinking about it. But otherwise I can’t think of anything else I’d like to do to it!

ALH P0128/16512 driving me insane!

Hello TDI friends! I've got one hell of a doozy for you all.

Got a 2003 Jetta TDI with the ALH with a non-stop P0128/16512 that just will not go away. Seeking help more from fellow technicians like myself but any advice will be appreciated. Myself and our client are just about to go insane with how much of a pain this Jetta is being! I've never been this flummoxed in my career.

What has been done so far:

Replaced coolant temp sensor with one from VW directly (dealer purchase) - checked resistances at different temperatures per bulletin 24 07 09 and all is OK

Replaced thermostat & thermostat housing: T-Stat is a MAHLE TX1392D 92c thermostat as this matches the VW spec of "Start opening at 85c-ends at 105c", currently VW only sells a 87c thermostat that starts opening at 77-79c, too cold. Thermostat housing is not OEM (Dansk brand) but doesn't seem to push on the thermostat at all so it's fully closed when installed

Wiring has been checked at the connector both at temp sensor and ECU ends - pins all in good condition with a tight connection - followed the bulletin 24 07 09 and resistance is well within spec, no changes when the connection is wiggled, Stabilant added to the pins on both ends just as a precaution.

Radiator was replaced due to a lack of flow & seep from the drivers side end tank - fan switch is OEM VW as well. Unless A/C is on the fans do not come on at all until 96c.

Cooling system has been vacuum filled every time.

Water pump is OK, inspected impeller when the thermostat was removed and the pump only rotates when the engine is rotated.

SO, the problem: within 10 minutes the car easily hits 90c+ when driving. The problem is that the fault is set roughly 5 minutes of driving as the car hangs at 55-59 for ~1-2 minutes. Why is it A: hanging this long at this temperature, and B: setting the fault before the "10 minute magic timer" for operating temperature occurs? HVAC is set to blower speed 1, temperature turned ~15* towards hot, A/C on because no one wants humid air. I do understand that this affects warmup times however this client has owned the car for over 20yrs and no way in hell can I tell him that "well you just gotta do XYZ now to keep that car happy!" It didn't do this until the end of last year and shouldn't today.

Other observations that may be helpful: It's slow. Painfully slow. Boost pressure seems OK from what I'm seeing in VCDS, and I'm aware the ALH isn't a rocketship but I'm having to be full foot to the floor to go up steeper hills. Zero boost faults are present. The car doesn't have a tune either. Nothing deleted, all stock.

I'm sure there's information I'm missing, but any and all help is appreciated!
