Finding the HDHomerun across VLANs

Hello all - has anyone had success accessing the HDHomerun device across VLANs?

For example, our "trusted" devices live on VLAN #1 but the HDHomerun lives on VLAN #2. If I connect a device to VLAN #2, the app can find the device just fine - but it doesn't seem to be aware enough to broadcast across the VLANs. All ports are open so I don't think this is a firewall issue.

I'm curious if anyone has found a way to forward VLAN #1 traffic to VLAN #2 - and more specifically, find the HDHomerun device on the second VLAN.

Thanks - appreciate any tips or suggestions that could be shared.

Sunday Smoke - 8lb Brisket

It’s rare that I can find a smaller brisket but found this 8lb beauty at RD yesterday - and 25% off.

She just went on the grates and hoping that it’ll be done in time for dinner. I’m out of pecan wood so today is just a charcoal cook with Jealous Devil.

Hope everyone has a smoke-filled afternoon.

AWS SAA - not feeling good...

I took the AWS SAA exam this morning. While waiting for the results, I gotta say that I'm not feeling great about the results.

What surprised me about the exam was the narrow focus on a couple of specific topics - largely S3 transfer acceleration, optimizing container workloads, a few SQS questions and some general networking (Transit Gateway, peering).

I also struggled a little with the wording in the questions. When given two choices, I usually pick the wrong answer. I felt like that summarized most of the questions.

We'll see what the results hold. Right now, I'm going to go look at dates to retake this exam.

Update: I passed with a score of 772. Thanks to all of you for the kind words and support.

How do guys smell so good? I need to know...

Every morning, I walk my dog on a riverwalk and pass by this guy who always smells amazing. And, it gets even better, the scent trails behind him for a good 200 ft.

I don't know how to describe it - other than it isn't a cologne. It could be aftershave, body wash, lotion or some essential oil.

Guys - what's the secret to having a scent like that? What am I missing from my morning routine to smell amazing like this guy? Help, please!

Emory job application question

Hello Emory Friends -

I'm looking for a little insight into the hiring process at Emory University. I applied for a role back in late March and the role shows that it's still open and my application is Under Department Consideration. How long do these candidate evaluations usually take?
I'm currently outside of the Emory system and looking for any connections that could help. Are there any suggestions for how to proceed?

Thanks for any tips navigating Emory's hiring process.

Laid off last week

I was laid off last week as part of a departmental restructure and cost-savings exercise. This is my first time being laid off in my career. I'm still trying to make sense of the decision to eliminate my role and remind myself that this isn't a reflection of my skills or accomplishments.

As a mid-50's guy who's worked in IT most of my career, I'm not looking forward to starting a job search. I hope my experience, age (wisdom) and broad IT background can help me stand out during the interview process.

It looks like the job market is starting to add new jobs based on this morning's job numbers report so I hope that it's a short break in between jobs.

Has anyone had any success in the application / interview process and what's been the difference maker for you?

Hope everyone looking for a role finds their dream job soon. The fear of the unknown is what keeps me awake at night.

Septic Tank Homeowner Advice

Hi all - we have only owned a home that’s on public sewer but are considering homes that are on septic tank (most are near lakes and rural areas).

How do I assess the age or condition of a septic tank? As someone with no experience dealing with g with it, what are the things I need to know or plan for? Does septic insurance exist? Is it recommended? What does maintenance look like?

If anyone regrets a home with septic, can you share the details? I’m truly blind here and would appreciate the good/bad of a home on a septic system. Thanks for the insight.

I'm dealing with a 2015 MBP (Intel-based) that's no longer able to keep current with MacOS releases. I've been on the fence with waiting for the new M5 Mac Mini but happened across a 2024 Mac Mini for $799 (24GB/256G).

After seeing that the prices are going to increase when the M5 is released, I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and lock into this 2024 model? I do light editing and really don't need horsepower - just reliable compute.

The M5 is a nice-to-have and I think I've talked myself into the M4.

That's it. Really just talking out loud - what would you do if you were me?
