Help me not botch my Win-A-Box

Two questions:
- Do I have to rent the vehicle through Hertz to take advantage of the free upgrades or can I do it through the C1Travel Portal?
- Is it really as easy as renting the cheapest one and then going and getting whatever upgrade I want?
Any tips on getting the most value out of the process are greatly appreciated
