Park ranger (maintenance)

Hello I would really appreciate some help here because I am kind of stuck. I’m interested in becoming a maintenance park ranger and from what I’ve seen it is very competitive to get a park ranger job but on the other side of the coin I’ve seen people say that maintenance jobs aren’t competitive and usually go unfilled. How true is that because I was planning on getting a couple of certifications through a community college nearby in EPA and OSHA while also volunteering at a local park, then this summer I was going to join my states conservation corp in trail maintenance to get a leg up when I start applying. Does this sound like a good plan? Also one other question I would love to be a park ranger but I don’t really want to live in the park I don’t mind commuting to the park, is it unheard of for park rangers to live in the city or suburban area and commuting to the park for there full time job? All answers are appreciated thank you!

seasonal maintenance ranger question

How competitive is it to get a seasonal maintenance ranger job? Am I better off applying within my states agency and what trades do they tend to look for when it comes to a permanent position?

Should I pursue Criminal Justice or Social Work?

Hello! I’m a first year student at a community college and I’m currently majoring in Social Work I wanted to have a Social Work degree because I wanted to work as a corrections officer in juvenile and make my way up as a case worker or probation officer, I would also like to work at BOP as a treatment specialist eventually. I saw for all of these jobs in the description they accept Criminal Justice degrees as well. I’m interested in Criminal Justice because eventually I think I’d like to see myself in management and figured that a CJ degree is common for advancement. I would just like to hear from people in the field if it would be best to get a CJ or SW degree. Any help is appreciated thank you! :)

BA or BS in Geography?

Hello everyone, I’m currently a first year community college student majoring in Social Work but for a while now I have been looking at switching my major to Geography. I’ve heard that the degree has one of the lowest unemployment rates and honestly I’ve always had an interest in geography and the jobs related to that field really interest me. I think I am going to go ahead and switch soon but I don’t know if I should focus on getting a BA or a BS, I want to be a geography teacher in high school and eventually earn my PhD in Geography to maybe one day become a professor, two other careers that’s interested me were urban planning and surveying but not as much as teaching and academia. So with that being said should I focus on a BS or BA? All advice is appreciated thank you.

Jobs other than LCSW after my MSW

Hello! I recently made a post on here asking about what jobs I can get while I’m going to school for my BSW and I got some great answers so thank you. So I know I would like to get my MSW in the future, but is it kind of expected that if you get your MSW that you go get your LCSW license? The only jobs I’ve been able to find that you can get with your MSW other than LCSW are MSW case managers and professors. I’d like to get my MSW to advance my career but would these be the only jobs available typically? All help is appreciated thank you.

Need help choosing between these 3 majors

Hello I am a first year at community college currently taking my general education classes because I’m undecided on what I want to major in. My current major is social work because I wanted to be a LCSW but I found out I would have to complete 3500 hours of training before getting my license after grad school, my other choices are Geography, Political Science, and History. To be honest I don’t really care if I find a job that’s related to those 3 degrees I just would like to earn a bachelors that I’d be interested in, develop good soft & hard skills, and just find a good paying job but between those 3 which would look the best in resume and give me the most skills?

Commissioning as a Social Work Officer?

Hello I am interested in joining the Coast Guard as a LCSW but when I talked to two recruiters recently they both said that those jobs were usually done by the USPHS. I recently found out through this article I was reading (https://www.mycg.uscg.mil/News/Article/3276870/coast-guard-launches-critically-trained-officers-program/) that apparently I can direct commission into the Coast Guard as a LCSW. Is this actually true because I talked to both of these recruiters a month ago and they said it was not possible?

Questions about becoming a probation officer

Hello I’m interested in becoming a probation officer and just had a few questions about becoming one.

  1. Do they look for any specific types of degrees? I’m currently majoring in social work but saw online that they also hire psychology and criminal justice majors.

  2. Does the type of probation officer you become sterile if you’re allowed to carry a firearm? I am interested in becoming a juvenile probation officer so I just want to know what the policy is on that. I know it can vary by district but is it common for juvenile probation POs to be unarmed?

  3. I’m also in the process of joining the navy reserves could that affect me getting a job or is this a military friendly career?

  4. Other than getting an internship are there any beginner level jobs I can do in the meantime to gain experience?

Any help is appreciated thank you.

Resume and Career advice

Hello,
I am interested in becoming a high school history teacher. The other day, I was updating my resume and started to feel a little unsure about my experience. Since I am just beginning college, I was wondering if the experience I currently have would make my resume appealing to employers or if there are other things I should focus on adding to help me land a teaching job in the future.
Thank you for your advice.

Questions about being in the reserves

Hello, I’m interested in joining the navy reserves but just had a couple questions. I’ve heard mixed answers online that if I join the reserves according to the navy’s needs, is that true? I live 15 minutes away from Norfolk and figured I’d be stationed there or at the air station in VB. another question I have is this a good resume booster, I don’t really know what exactly I want to do in life I’m currently in college majoring in social work and I have thought about being a probation officer, working for the VA, or some other type of federal job. The reserves caught my attention cause I have a son, the benefits are nice, and I’ve get pretence when applying for jobs I’ve heard. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Hello, I am interested in joining the Army as an LCSW and I was just curious what path I could take to become one? I understand I need a masters and a LCSW license but if I did rotc in the military would that give me a straight shot into it? And also how long would I need to do rotc for because I plan on going to community college first for online and then transferring?

▲ 6 r/historyteachers+1 crossposts

Hello, I made a post about maybe 2 weeks ago interested in becoming a teacher and I think I might actually stick with the idea. I was originally choosing between high school history or being an elementary school teacher and I think I’d rather go with high school because I would love to teach history. So far I am working at a daycare kindergarten readiness school and all of my other jobs I have worked I’ve just been a summer counselor, summer teachers assistant for kindergarten, and a summer tutor for elementary to middle school. All 3 of those jobs I was employed through the city for a summer youth program for about 3 months though, the job I have now I plan on staying here but when I finally earn my degree and teaching license, will all this experience help me land a job? Or should my experience be in something different? Any advice is appreciated, thank you. :)
