Digitakt2 - sampling external gear (Behringer Edge, Moog Labyrinth etc.)

I don’t have a Elektron Digitakt II (DT2) yet, but I’m trying to understand how it could fit into my setup.

Can anyone tell me if it’s possible to automatically sample a full loop from external gear that has its own sequencer (like mentioned Edge, Labyrinth)?

This is what I’d like to achieve:

  1. Connect MIDI OUT from the DT2 to MIDI IN on my external device (e.g. Edge), so my ext gear is also clocked from DT2
  2. Connect the audio output of the external device to the DT2 audio input
  3. Then:
    • a) DT2 sends a MIDI START command
    • b) DT2 records (samples) exactly one bar (or a defined length) from the external input
    • c) DT2 sends a MIDI STOP command to stop the external sequencer

If the full workflow above isn’t possible, are at least steps a) and b) supported?

EDIT: is any other Elektron gear (TV or OT) better suited for that kind of sampling of external gear?

What makes Octatrack so incredible?

Just to explain - I have just read that Octatrack is almost 16 years old (mk1) and that mk2 is technically the same machine - same OS, same electronics with only screen/keys parts changed.

And now -> this 16 years old device has better FX, timestretch etc. than really new hardware like Digitakt2.

Is there something that I'm missing and that is why I do not understand how Elektron could do so many great things with so old HW and still cannot do (or don't want?) with modern CPUs, lots of RAM etc. on latest hardware?

Any way to send start/stop command via MIDI when sampling is started?

I want to sample my Behringer Edge on SP-404mk2.

Setup:
- audio from Edge goes into 404
- midi from 404 goes into midi in on Edge (Edge is set to take clock from 404)

So far so good. Everything works in scenario when I play pattern on 404 - when I start pattern also Edge is starting to play.

Now, I would like to record on 404 some loops from Edge (1-2 bar long). Somehow I believed that when I press 'REC' on 404 it will also send start/stop commands (stop at the end of sampling) but it does not.

Is there any way of doing that?

In a manual there is only info "You can control the start/stop of recording from an external MIDI device using the start command (FA)/stop command (FC)." but it means that it can be started from external gear rather.

For now my workaround is that I used my Elektron Digitone midi out, connected via splitter and sending start/stop commands to both - 404 and Edge - and it works but... Is there really no way of doing that directly from 404?

EDIT:
I don't want to connect the other way around so Edge MIDI out to 404 MIDI in, since I do not like stability of clock on Edge (but checked briefly and it works - when I start playing pattern on Edge then 404 starts recording).

Also things starting to be complex when I want to record Edge in Live Looper mode. If I record something and then stop playing. I have found no way to send start command (even from Digitone) to start both machines - Edge and 404 - at same time. Somehow 404 is not responding to start command in Looper mode...
