I have a polygynous (I’ve seen 2 queens) bucket colony of solenopsis invicta that I scooped from the backyard a couple months ago, it had 1-200 winged alates, naturally I figured they would just lumber around forever in there. It was getting dry in there, so I did a drip flood about 2 days ago, they have since rebuilt but the bucket is still pretty wet. Rather than freak out the housekeepers, I elected to set the bucket in the backyard today in the sun. I came back a couple hours later to the workers going crazy and the alates flying off in droves! I was not expecting that at all.
