r/antkeeping

Found near Traverse City, Mi. Any possible ID and any tips for a noob.

I’ve tried a few times before with wild queens, but I’m a noob and this is the furthest I’ve made it. How do I keep the brood healthy I know she’ll do most of the work and so will the workers once they grow up. I’m thinking possibly Camponotus chromaiodes based on the coloration. Black head and abdomen with a dark redish brown thorax. I don’t have the know how to verify 100% anyways any information helps.

Local ant species

First photo is an obvious one. Camponotus modoc soldier.

Second photo, unsure of species. 1-2 mm in size. Want to say tapinoma due to heart shaped gaster?

Third photo, lasius (niger or neoniger?)

4th & 5th photo maybe formica? Super fast little bugger so I’m assuming so.

For the record, taxonomy is not my strong suit. I get easily confused by tons of different info (autism)

Help identifying queen ant

I caught this queen early morning in the Midwest, specifically southern indiana, shorter than the length of my fingernail

Are those pupae? If so how close is the most mature one to becoming a nanitic?

How good are their flight skills?

How good are the flights skills of the queens compared to wasps? Can they control how fast and where they fly or is it more like big leaps they take?

Polyergus rufescens queen

I caught a Polyergus rufescens queen which I want to experiment founding a colony with. I know they're a parasitic species and fully rely on their host workers, I've watched their impressive raids!

I went and dug up a small part of a Formica rufibarbis colony and got a little brood from them:

  • 4 pupae
  • bunch of larvae
  • 4 young workers
  • 4 workers

I want to try and introduce the queen to the brood and young workers, however I'm not entirely sure how to. I'll chill them in the fridge for a little while so the young workers are slowed down for the queen introduction. I'll put the workers in a small outworld and connect the queen's testtube to it. Other than that I have no ideas or clue on how to proceed...does anyone have any insights?

What am I looking at?

I spoted a group of winged ants and workers bundled together, just by what looks like nest entrance Are these male alates waiting to fly when the sun goes down a little?

Crawled out of the shower drain. Queen or worker?

Is this a queen or worker? Survived the whole shower clinging for life so I saved her. Midatlantic USA

Lasius virgin queen + male alate

So apparently I misidentified them before, but here’s a Lasius virgin queen and drone. Now that I know they’re lasius, not sure I’m going to keep them, as I have more colonies of tetramorium nearby than I do of lasius. Not exactly sure what species of lasius she is, but a nice catch/spot none the less.

Ant colony in silly straw glasses

(NZ) Hello I have found a young well developed colony in a straw in my cupboard and have placed this in its own small terrarium. What do I need to provide them at this stage? They have only brood so far so I think they're still establishing themselves a population and I think she's not much larger than the workers I haven't found her yet. Any advice for NZ ants appreciated will be updated with photos :) My mini tank they're in has an orange red hue, ants can't see red light but would this be red enough for them? Or does it need to be true red?
