Moving Companies recommendations?

I’m moving from a house in Kalihi to a condo in town. Kalihi house is 3 bedroom but we don’t really use the third and are planning on getting rid of a lot of stuff like workout gear.

House in town has two floors which I am concerned about. My finances wants to just get a U-Haul but I’m worried about the heavy pieces of furniture that need to go upstairs. I’m hoping to get some estimates that seem reasonable that will change his mind so we don’t have to do all the heavy lifting.

I’m also curious if anyone can give an idea of what they’ve paid for similar moves? We are somewhat traumatized after hiring movers in Brooklyn to a move us to a home 10 blocks away and getting charged $900 for them to not move all of our stuff and then threaten us because they wanted a 40% tip (20% for each mover 🙃).

I’ve seen some postings about 2 guys a truck and Kamaina movers. I’ve used Royal Hawaiian before to move from Hawaii to Mainland so I know how expensive they are and I’m trying to be a little more frugal.

Asbestos Options

Hi all!

Just recently purchased a condo which has popcorn ceilings. The building is pretty old but I’m not sure when the last time the unit itself was renovated so planning on having the material tested to see if it has asbestos. I know there is a good chance it’s positive, but I want to be sure.

Assuming it is, I’m curious if anyone has experience dealing with asbestos removal or even encapsulation. I know removal is probably ideal, but it’s so expensive. I’ve called around and it doesn’t sound like many places are willing to encapsulate. We have some time to renovate before we move in so now feels like the time to take care of it. There is also some staining near the kitchen area which looks pretty unsightly but otherwise it does seem to be intact.

Any advice or recommendations for people who can help with this is much appreciated!

Considering DIY refinishing

Just bought a condo with some hardwood on the first floor that my fiance and I are considering trying to DIY refinish. The floors seem to be in decent shape aside from one are near the balcony that we think might be water damage potentially. The stairs also have a thick wooden rail which seems to have very thick goopy finisher? on it. It almost appears to be like melting off the railing if that makes any sense.

Curious how to best approach the railing which is not round but like a longer rectangular piece and this particular area of flooring. Is spot treatment an option? Or should we just go ahead and do the whole thing?

Making new appliances fit.

Hi all,

I have a new condo with very vintage appliances that do not work. They are old enough that they are a bit smaller than modern day options. The range in particular is a drop in model measuring around 27in and the hood above is the same width. The range has a wood trim that I should be able to remove to fit a larger 30 inch, but I’m struggling to figure out what to do about the hood. I was planning on a microwave over it to save on space but all the options I can find are also 30 inch. Is there a feasible way to widen the area which is surrounded by cabinets? I was hoping not to have to mess with the cabinetry right now but I have no idea if it would be possible to widen the space without ruining the cabinets on either side.

Has anyone dealt with anything similar?
