I don’t think I want the life that comes with a normal 7–8 hour a day job.

I’m a 25 year old guy, and I recently found out that I may be getting a job. Nothing is officially confirmed yet, but apparently the company wants me.

Honestly, I’ve been pretty sad about it because I don’t want a job.

I know some people might call me spoiled or lazy, so let me explain.

I’m a Gulf Arab and I live with my parents. This is completely normal in my culture. It’s common for people to live with their parents well into adulthood, sometimes until marriage or longer, so please don’t make that the focus. My parents aren’t forcing me to work because I’m a burden on them or because they want me to move out. That’s not the situation. I’m not asking them for money either I have my own income.

For the past 2.5 years, I’ve been receiving around $651 USD per month from the government. I know it won’t necessarily last forever, but currently it allows me to live a pretty simple life with a lot of control over my time.

I go to the gym, see my friends, go out, cook my own food, and generally do whatever I want with my day. And honestly, I’ve never looked better or felt better.

When I was in university, I didn’t take care of myself nearly as well. I ate terribly, didn’t work out, and became overweight. Looking back, I don’t want to go back to that version of myself.

The job would pay around $2,600 USD/month to start, which obviously is much more money. But I’d be working 7 hours a day, 5 days a week.

And that’s what bothers me.

Even if I only have 2–4 hours of actual work to do, I’d still have to sit there for the rest of the time. Those hours aren’t mine anymore.

I’d also have less time to cook, go to the gym, and take care of myself. I might have to start paying for prepared meal plans just to maintain the lifestyle I’ve built.

So yes, I’d be making an extra ~$1,950 a month, but I’d be trading a huge amount of my time for it.

And I know some people will say, “Then start a business, invest, freelance, find passive income, etc.”

But that’s the thing: I don’t have a passion or ambition for any of that either. I don’t know what I want to do with my life.

I don’t have a dream career. I don’t have some business idea I’m dying to pursue. I don’t have some huge ambition.

I don’t know what I want, but I know what I don’t want.

And I don’t want to spend 7–8 hours a day working simply because that’s what society has normalized for generations. I know the 8-hour workday has historical roots in the Industrial Revolution and labor movement, and I understand why it became normal. I just don’t personally understand why I should want that life for myself.

I know my parents want what’s best for me, and I appreciate that. But I don’t know if this is what’s best for me.

I’m honestly pretty lost.

(EDIT: I do understand where my parents are coming from. They mainly want me to have a stable and reliable source of income rather than depending on a government allowance that could be reduced or cut off at some point. I understand their concern, and I know they’re trying to look out for my future. I just don’t know if the trade off is worth it for me, because I value having control over my time so much.)

Edit 2:
I don’t think some people are understanding what I’m actually trying to say. I don’t have a problem with working. My issue is specifically with the 7–8+ hour workday that has become the standard over the course of modern industrial society, and whether it still makes sense for modern life.
I’m questioning whether there could be a better balance between work and life. Do we work to live, or do we live to work?
If I can finish my actual tasks in 3–4 hours, why do I have to stay for another 3–4 hours when there’s nothing meaningful left to do? To me, it’s about efficiency and quality over simply counting hours. If the work is done, why can’t I leave?
I’ve also talked to friends who recently started working, and many of them say they’re so mentally drained when they get home that they don’t have much energy left for anything else. That’s the part I struggle to accept, especially when this can become your routine for the next 30–40 years.
So perhaps I didn’t phrase my original post clearly enough: I’m questioning the working-hours system, not simply complaining about having to work.
And if you disagree, that’s completely fine. I’m genuinely interested in hearing different perspectives I’d just appreciate keeping the discussion respectful.

So I’m curious:

Am I being spoiled and unrealistic for valuing my time more than money?

Have any of you felt this way in your 20s? Did your perspective change as you got older?

I’m genuinely looking for thoughtful perspectives.

(This post was reorganized with the help of AI because English isn’t my first language.)

Weird gym interaction today.

Had a strange interaction at the gym today and I’m trying to figure out if I handled it fine or if I should’ve said something.

I was using a machine doing my sets. A guy in a black shirt comes up and asks “how many sets you got left?” I said 2. He said ok and went away.
What confused me is he wasn’t even waiting for me or anything. He was using another machine next to me before I even started mine, and the machine I was on was free the whole time. So it’s not like he was just standing there waiting for it.

Later, after I finish one set and I’ve got 1 left, a guy in a blue shirt comes over kinda irritated and says “you’re taking too long?” I told him no, I’ve got one set left.

Then he points behind me and says “he wants to work in with you” in a pretty bossy tone. At that moment I still didn’t even know who he was pointing at because I hadn’t even looked behind me yet.
I told him something like “he didn’t actually tell me that he wanted to,” because the guy in the black shirt only asked how many sets I had left, he never actually said he wants to work in.

Then the guy in the blue shirt goes “I’m telling you right now he wants to work in with you.” I just said yeah ok whatever since I was literally in between sets anyway.

When I got off the machine I finally looked behind me and realized it was actually the same guy in the black shirt who had asked me earlier.

Honestly in my head I was like why couldn’t he just wait like 5 minutes for me to finish my two sets. I don’t mind sharing machines at all but it felt unnecessary to get irritated over it. I even wanted to say like “why are you so mad?” but I didn’t want to turn it into an argument in the gym.
Am I overthinking this or was that just rude?
Could i have responded better? Or did i handle it well?
