Story Time

A bus driver from Nainital named Nar Singh came to Kainchi to meet Baba and remained with him for the rest of the day. It was past eleven at night when Baba permitted him to leave. Coming out of the entrance gate, he did not like the idea of walking the 19km back to Nainital along the road.

He decided to take the route through the forest, which was only 8km, but he was afraid of going through the forest alone on a dark night. Anyway, he left, taking long, brisk steps. After some distance, he saw a black dog following him.He was frightened, thinking that the dog may come from behind and bite him. He continued going forward, every now and then glancing at the dog.

He had forgotten all about the fears of his imagination and his attention was concentrated on the dog. The dog maintained a certain distance from him, but followed him all the way. Reaching Nainital, he turned to see the dog again, but it had disappeared.

The next day, when he arrived in Kainchi for darshan, Baba, without any prompting, said,“That was a dog. You were unnecessarily scared. Bhairav [a form of Shiva]rides a dog. He had come to protect you."

Baba Ji's mystery...

This is a story from the days when Baba Neem Karoli lived in the village of Neem Karoli. During those days, Baba did not interact much with people. He remained deeply absorbed in his spiritual practices and meditation.

A devotee named Gopal used to arrange Baba's food every day.

One day, some villagers came to Baba and said, “Baba, we are going to Vrindavan. Please come with us.”

Baba replied, “Alright, you go. I will meet you in Vrindavan.”

After saying this, Baba went back into his cave.

Every morning, Gopal would bring Baba's food and leave it near the cave. Baba had strictly instructed him, “Do not enter the cave, no matter what happens. Whenever I wish, I will come out, eat the food, and leave.”

Gopal followed Baba's instructions exactly. For him, disobeying his Guru's command was almost like committing a sin.

One day, when the people who had gone to Vrindavan were returning, they met Gopal. At that time, Gopal was carrying back an empty plate after Baba had finished his meal.

The villagers told him, “Baba met us in Vrindavan! He took us to many temples and showed us around.”

But according to Gopal's understanding, Baba had never left Neem Karoli.

The devotees further explained that Baba had been with them throughout their journey, and because of his presence, they faced no difficulties.

Gopal was shocked to hear this. Every day, he personally brought food for Baba and later carried the empty plate back home. How could Baba have been in Vrindavan at the same time?

For Gopal, it was simply impossible to believe.

A few days later, Baba came out of the cave and noticed that Gopal seemed worried and disturbed.

Baba asked him, “Tell me, son, what is the matter?”

Gopal replied, “Maharaj Ji, I bring food for you every day. But these people say that you were in Vrindavan. How can that possibly be true?”

Baba smiled and said, “These people just keep telling lies. There is no need to believe what they say. People are always saying one thing or another.”

When a sadhu came in aashram and got angry

Once, Neem Karoli Baba was sitting peacefully at his ashram.

Late one night, a wandering sadhu arrived there. He had been travelling across India and thought, “Why not spend the night at this ashram?”

As soon as he entered, he was amazed.

The place was beautifully maintained, incredibly clean, and looked almost like a temple. The sadhu was genuinely impressed.

But then he discovered something that completely changed his perception.

This wasn’t a temple… it was an ashram.

And the more he looked around, the more confused—and irritated—he became.

He thought to himself:

“How can a sadhu live with so many comforts and luxuries? What kind of ashram is this? And what kind of Baba lives like this?”

Unable to hold back his thoughts, the sadhu finally walked up to Baba and, pointing his finger at him, said reprovingly:

“Baba… and this wealth? Is this what you call religion?”

What happened next left the sadhu completely speechless.
